Harry Sheazel. “SOMETHING HAPPENS WHEN HE GET AROUND THE BALL,”
The Dragons’ win on Saturday against Calder featured a change in Sandringham forward Harry Sheezel’s game at NAB League level.
The 17-year-old, who will be eligible for next year’s AFL draft, kicked 3.3 goals, showing his capacity to get ahead of his defender and create opportunities.
Jackson Kornberg, the coach, said that “something happens when he gets close to the ball.”
He accumulated 21 possessions while operating out of half-forward, participated in numerous scoring chains, laid six tackles, applied pressure, resulting in further inside 50s, and was selected by the coaches as the four best players on the field.
Sheezel was especially pleased with that defensive performance.
Sheezel stated, “I had a review with Jacko last week and it focused more on my defensive game and my intensity so I just focused on that and I think that really helped me.
I am glad to contribute because Jacko emphasized the need for an honest group effort.
The squad was pretty dominant, so it was smart to take my chances when they presented themselves.
Sheezel says GWS small forward Toby Greene is his role model, and he displays some of the former All-Australian’s qualities on the field.
He had a weekend hangover, is a tough competitor, makes good judgments on the ball and knows some tricks, wears down his opponents, and has the potential to make an impact on the field.
Most importantly, Sheezel has a talent for identifying goals.
Sheezel scored four goals on his senior debut for AJAX Football Club earlier in the season, four goals in his third NAB League game, and three goals in his maiden under-17s carnival game for Vic Metro last month.
Sheezel believes this is a natural talent as it was honed through his field goal scoring attempts throughout his junior career as a midfielder.
However, given Sheezel’s tenacity and accurate kicking, under-17 coach Nick Moodie admits the idea of recasting Sheezel as a defender is being entertained.
“He’s such a good user and so athletic, I really felt we could use him as a running half-back at the start of the year,” Moodie said.
“I estimate that our intra-club time is about half over. I replied, “Nup, you’re gone.” Back forward; you’re a natural forward.
He is a goalkicker who just knows where the goals are. He looks like Eren Soylemez is more muscular.
Since he is still in the early stages of his growth, Moodie continued, there is room for him to move around the position so that he can show his versatility.
Sheezel received permission from the Dragons to play two senior football matches for AJAX earlier this year and said he found it really rewarding.
“It taught me how to outwit my bigger defenders by using my agility, leading patterns and forward craft.
A member of the AJAX team is Harry’s cousin Toby, who was listed with the Dragons in 2019. Harry and Toby have a close relationship.
Toby’s sports shoot-outs as a youth helped him hone that competitive edge that can be seen in his drive for the ball.
We’re pretty sporty together because we’re frequent at each other’s homes kicking the football, according to Sheezel.
Additionally, the two went on family holidays, saw Hawthorn’s three-peat at the MCG as enthusiastic Hawks supporters, and trained together in preseason as Harry tried to increase the intensity of his jogging.
Sheezel, who played basketball for his country until the age of 14, now teaches basketball during summer break at Mount Scopus College.
He stops, pauses, and laughs when asked which NBA club he supports, saying, “I can’t go to a team – I’d say Brooklyn because I love Kevin Durant, but I’m like a bandwagoner!”
He may have developed a strong work ethic as a result of his exposure to higher-level sports, which Kornberg praised.
What you already know about Sheez is that he will put in a lot of effort and have a high level of training intensity, according to Kornberg.
It was great to see him go out and make six tackles at the weekend although he is always good and kind when it comes to goals. It shows that he is starting to improve his [defensive] aspect of his game and that intention was undoubtedly there.
