They welcomed their son, Dave, in 1972 in Okinawa, Japan, after four years of marriage. Waymon remained a Marine until 1998, when he retired as a Master Gunnery Sergeant. While serving, he moved to several bases all over the world.

Dave moved from one military base to another over the course of two to three years as a child. He was born in Okinawa and his family eventually settled in San Diego after moving to several bases in California, North California, Hawaii, and then back to Okinawa.

He started at Vista High School as a freshman and was recognized as the junior varsity baseball team’s most valuable player. The following year, Dave switched to Rancho Buena Vista High School, where he excelled in baseball, football, and basketball.
