NEW YORK’S LONG ISLAND: A Long Island politician’s college tuition was at least $50,000 paid for by a millionaire couple. The Democratic front-runner in the August 23 primary is Josh Lafazan, the youngest member of the Nassau County Legislature, who is running in a competitive congressional race. In recent financial disclosure papers, Lafazan named wealthy businessman Bryan Lawrence and his wife Elizabeth as a “creditor” who gave him a “student loan” between $50,000 to $100,000 in September 2020.
Given that it came before Lafazan’s congressional campaign got underway earlier this year, he is permitted to accept it under federal election law. Experts in electoral law, however, contend that restricting individual donations goes against the letter of the law. They think that Lafazan could have easily paid off his school loans with the same amount of money given that he was rich enough to contribute $166,000 of his own money to his campaign.

The Federal Election Commission may interpret the load as an indirect payment or indirect transfer of funds to Lafazan, which allowed him to properly provide money to his campaign that wasn’t his his, according to longtime election lawyer Jerry Goldfeder, who was speaking to The Post. “The FEC looks very carefully at the origins of a candidate’s money when they are making enormous contributions or loans to their own campaign because it needs to be their own money legitimately,” he continued.
Lafazan campaign assistant Kim Devlin supported the Lawrences’ arrangement, saying, “Josh was allowed to borrow money for graduate school from a friend as opposed to a bank or a school loan provider, according to the facts. The Lawrences gave $20,300 to Lafazan’s congressional campaign in addition to the loan. Records show that Bryan Lawrence also received a $5,800 refund from the campaign because he exceeded the election-year spending limit.

Lafazan has raised $1.53 million for the contest as of June 30, 2022, the most of any Democratic primary candidate, according to campaign finance disclosures. Jon Kaiman, a deputy for the Suffolk County executive, and Robert Zimmerman, a seasoned member of the DNC, are among the candidates.
