On Tuesday, August 9, Joan Caffiel, who was 89 years old, was killed by her own pit bull after it mauled her. Calls were first made to the Las Vegas Police Department around 9:45 am about an elderly woman being attacked by a dog in the 4100 block of Pennwood Avenue. KVVU-TV said the elderly woman was pronounced dead once emergency workers arrived on the scene. When the police got there, they found the dog at a neighbor’s house, where they took it to animal control. A woman drags her bloodied body into an elevator to get away from a dangerous pit bull. Joan Caffiel had very bad dementia, and a nurse was taking care of her when the dog attacked her. In an interview with KVVU-TV, Peyton Faircloth, Caffiel’s grandson, said Buc, the pit bull he raised for six years, was a rescue and had never been mean. “He didn’t mean to hurt her. Maybe, he’s trying to keep him safe from someone or something,” Faircloth said. “That dog doesn’t have a bad bone in his body.

He sleeps with us every night and he loves grandma.” Buc is also said to be very careful with the woman who died. Faircloth said of her grandmother, “She called me and she was screaming.” A neighbor told KUVV-TV that he was “careful” when he was near Buc. “I just saw them letting their dog out. The dog was released. They will live on the second floor, and the dog will run free on the first floor,” said the neighbor, who did not want to give his name. According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention from 1994, more than 4.5 million people are attacked by dogs each year, and 800,000 of them require medical care for bite wounds.

The American Veterinary Medical Association says that most dog attacks can be prevented by taking some important steps. If you have a puppy, socialize it by introducing it to people and other pets at an early age. This will help him feel comfortable around other people when he grows up. Make sure you have a collar on your dog when you walk it outside so that you can control it if it becomes mischievous. To be a good pet parent, you need to make sure your pet gets regular exercise. You should make sure that the dog you choose is suitable for your home and that it gets the training it needs.

Teach your children and other small family members how to behave around dogs and when they should do so. Watch the dog’s body language and actions to see if it is stressed, scared, or angry. Learn when you shouldn’t interact with a dog and how to keep things from getting out of hand when they could be dangerous. Also, you should not approach a dog when it is sleeping, eating, sick, injured, playing with toys, or with its puppies.
