Day Shift, the first film directed by stunt coordinator and martial artist JJ Perry, debuts on Netflix on August 12, 2022. Although Perry, known for his stunt work in blockbusters like John Wick and F9: The Fate of the Furious, succeed in distinguishing his vampire action comedy from others in the genre, it lacks the thrilling achievements one might expect from his film. Jamie Foxx, who leads the cast as the protagonist and vampire hunter Bud Jablonski, is really good at balancing the act divided into action, comedy, satire, horror, and drama. No one but Foxx has ever achieved this feat. To be fair, Seth, played by Dave Franco, did a great job of providing some welcome slapstick humor in the film and worked well with Jamie Foxx’s character. The group as a whole contributes to the mood of the film, and Snoop Dogg and Karla Souza both stand out in their limited roles. However, the plot, which remained mostly disorganized and underdeveloped, cannot be praised in the same way. Day Shift successfully manages to entertain audiences for a mindless Friday night movie, but don’t expect anything special. For the full review and synopsis of the movie, continue reading. The storyline of Day Shift is ridiculous and convoluted. In the San Fernando Valley, Bud Jablonski was once a blue-collar laborer who cleaned wealthy people’s swimming pools until his boss left. Then he goes back to his real job, which is hunting vampires and removing their fangs. He could support himself on a good day because of the huge amount of money his fangs could bring. Until he needs $10,000 to stop his family from moving to Florida, he envisions a topsy-turvy existence with his undercover job and a family that includes his adorable and witty daughter Paige (Zion Broadnax) and ex-wife Jocelyn (Meagan Good). His only option is to rejoin the “union” of vampire hunters who expelled him for repeatedly breaking some of its rules. Big John (Snoop Dogg), his unconventional friend and supporter, has the power to regain his position. All that is required is for a nervous accountant named Seth (Dave Franco) to oversee his field operations and report to union leader Ralph Seeger (Eric Lange). In Day Shift, there were discussions about vampire rashes, a supreme vampire named El Jefe, black-market sunscreen that allows vampires to be out in the sun, five different types of vampires, each are categorized by age, and different codes that sound like nonsense. but really vampire hunting techniques. However, in the movie, none of them make a whole lot of sense. The rules of the vampire hunting union aren’t the only thing Bud and Seth discover have gaps in them; they are also obscured by the film’s plot. Vampires sometimes take too long to kill, making wooden bullets ineffective, while other times they are destroyed by machine guns alone. But couldn’t they have been killed with an iron blade? The formidable vampire queen created by Karla Souza is a badass antagonist who is defeated rather quickly. The ancient female vampire from the first scene, who was his daughter, put up a better fight, making the conclusion seem rushed and cut short. Big John, a character played by Snoop Dogg, apparently sacrificed himself to kill a legion of vampires, but when he came back to life, where were his fangs? Overall, Day Shift is fun to watch as long as you leave criticism at the door. It seems that the designers had an ambitious plan in the beginning that gradually lost steam and came to an unfortunate conclusion. However, the film’s mindless action and general vomit would make for an ideal movie night. Day Shift still lacks John Wick-caliber action by JJ Perry Day Shift begins with a fight scene where Foxx shows off his acting skills as he defeats an old vampire with a voracious appetite for blood. The opening action scene is a very good technique to draw people in. It includes just the right amount of gore and special effects. However, as more lackluster vampires charge Jablonski, it gets annoying and boring to see the same maneuvers repeated over and over again. Watch the same stunts over and over in one of the sequences where Bud, Seth, and the Nazarian brothers—all professional vampire hunters—fight a lair of vampires. Repeated gunshots, vampires being tossed around like zombies hit by bullets, weird spider walks, and bloodied faces. What happened to Keanu Reeves’ incredible action choreography from the John Wick movies? Watch Day Shift on Netflix for a quirky, comedic, video game-inspired vampire hunting adventure, as well as Jamie Foxx’s excellent performance in an uninspired film.
