Everyone’s high school experience is different—just ask Mindy Kaling.

Former star Office is co-authored by Netflix I never neverwhich just ended its third season on August 12. The show follows Devi (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan) and her pack of eclectic friends as they navigate high school and adolescence in California’s San Fernando Valley.

While the show does deal with some tough real-world issues — death, cultural differences, heartbreak — it’s definitely more light-hearted and lighthearted than some of its contemporaries, namely HBO Euphoria.

Mindy said it was totally by design.

“I like Euphoria and I think [creator] Sam [Levinson] looks like a genius I think it has a lot to say about things like sex and drug use and addiction, and it’s incredibly interesting, but we don’t have a lot of experience with that.” she told The Hollywood Reporter August 11. “I’m sitting on the edge of my seat watching this show, but I feel like nerds going after guys is more of what we feel comfortable writing about, so we do it. We write about fighters, fools and people who are underestimated.”
