LAS VEGAS, NEVADA:

On Thursday evening, August 11, the National Weather Service issued a flood warning to alert residents to possible heavy rain, flooding and frequent lightning. Not long after, Twitter users turned up on the site with images and videos of water pouring into casinos, flooding blackjack tables, and many more horrific footage playing out right in the center of Nevada City.

Las Vegas was hit by 0.58 inches of precipitation Thursday, making for a total of 1.28 inches of Las Vegas precipitation this season, according to the National Weather Service. “What a storm!” cried the weather service. News of a second flood came barely two weeks after Twitter users posted videos of another flood wreaking havoc on Las Vegas Boulevard.

Water can be seen collecting on the floor at Circa Resort and Casino, having recently cracked and been poured through a screen. This can be seen in videos that have just been shared online. Additional videos have been discovered showing events similar to those in Nevada. A second video was sent to Twitter and it shows water pouring through the Caesars Palace screen. Water damage was also observed in the underground car park of the LINQ Hotel. After the ceiling was found to have been damaged by water, Planet Hollywood Casino was also damaged by the flooding scenario.

As people in Las Vegas looked out their windows after the storm, they said they could see “rain curtains.” In the course of the storm, continuous lightning was reported several times and the power supply was interrupted several times. Alexander Wolf, a Las Vegas local, was quoted by NYP as saying, “Electrical surges set off the fire alarms of numerous buildings, prompting fire departments to head into the storm to respond to them.” Wolf was referring to the recent storm that has hit the city.

According to information provided to the Post by Las Vegas fire information officer Tim Szymanski, the department has not received any reports of injuries as a direct result of the flooding. Nevertheless, the flood seems to be responsible for considerable damage to property.

“We have fantastic drainage systems, but occasionally the water just overloads them,” Simon Jowitt, an economic geologist and lecturer at the University of Las Vegas, told The Post. It’s also possible that homeless people taking shelter in drainage systems are putting themselves at risk by doing so.” He continued by saying, “Another concern is that we don’t rain very often, so it’s difficult to assess whether roofs and the like are really waterproof; probably what happened in the casinos tonight.”
