Timbaland and Swizz Beatz are suing Triller, a short music video app, for $28 million for contract breach after the app bought the duo’s live streaming music platform Verzuz.

The case was filed in Los Angeles Superior Court on Tuesday, Aug. 16, according to the Washington Post. The legal representatives of Timbaland and Swizz Beatz argue that Triller has rejected their payment requests and is now in default.

The lawsuit alleges that although the couple received payments in January and April of last year, the payments due in January of this year are still unpaid. Payments continued to be delayed even after both parties had agreed on a new payment arrangement. Representatives from Timbaland, Swizz Beatz and Triller have not yet commented.

According to Swizz Beatz and Timbaland, musicians who were part of Verzuz, such as DMX, Jeezy, Gucci Mane, Gladys Knight and others, would receive a share of their shares.

Trill announced in 2021 that it would take over Verzuz for an undisclosed amount. In addition, it marked the end of their partnership with Apple Music.

Under the contract, Timbaland and Swizz Beatz would become members of the Triller Network’s board of directors and shareholders. 43 artists associated with Verzuz will receive part of their shareholding from them so that they can continue to work in the music business.

While details of the transaction were not made public at the time, it was recently revealed that it involved an eight-figure amount. The first installment was to be done at closing, followed by two more on the deal’s first and second anniversary, and finally four in total.

Despite Triller’s failure to pay, a new contract was drawn up requiring Triller to pay $9 million on March 17 and $500,000 each to Timbaland and Swizz Beatz over the following ten months. Trill still hasn’t paid anything and after receiving a notification they haven’t responded either.

Timbaland and Swizz Beatz are suing Triller for damages of $28,095,000, in addition to costs, fees and preliminary interest.
