His mother was born on December 18, 1897 in Fernwood, Jefferson County, Ohio, and his father, a barber, was born in Montesilvano, Pescara. Domenico Barra, Angela’s father, fled Monasterolo del Castello in Bergamo. Guglielmo “William” Antonio Crocetti was the older brother of Martin (1916-1968). Columbia Pictures and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer were interested in Martin, but no Hollywood deal was made. At the Glass Hat Club in New York, where both perform, he met comedian Jerry Lewis. Martin and Lewis soon became friends, prompting them to perform in each other’s shows and create a musical comedy trio. On July 24, 1946, they made their debut as a group at the 500 Club in Atlantic City, where they received poor reviews. Skinny D’Amato, the owner, warned them that they would lose their jobs if they didn’t come up with a stronger act for their second performance that night. Lewis and Martin made the decision to “go broke” while huddled in the alley behind the bar. Their act consisted of songs, skits and improvised stuff. Due to their success, they were offered a number of lucrative assignments along the East Coast, which culminated in a run at Copacabana in New York. Martin tried to sing when Lewis interrupted and harassed him, and the two eventually started chasing each other across the stage. Both claimed that their ability to play with each other while ignoring the audience was their secret. On June 20, 1948, the team made its television debut on the first episode of The Ed Sullivan Show (then known as The Toast Of The Town) on the CBS TV network. Composers Rodgers and Hammerstein also made their appearance. The two hired aspiring comedians Norman Lear and Ed Simmons to create their roles in an effort to improve their performance. The two would expand the scope of their act beyond nightclubs with the help of Lear and Simmons.

Martin has long been portrayed as a tuxedo-clad Vegas performer.
