In the season in which Stoke won promotion back to the top flight of the English football league system, he was appointed captain by Tony Pulis. Matteo played 13 league games until the end of October, after which he only played once before the end of the season, a game in November 2007. Due to injury, this was the last game of his playing career.
2004
In July 2004, Matteo signed a three-year contract with Blackburn Rovers. He made his Blackburn debut against West Bromwich Albion in a 1–1 draw. He scored his first and only goal for Blackburn in their 3–0 win over Colchester United in the FA Cup.
2002
When Rio Ferdinand joined Manchester United in the summer of 2002, Matteo was made captain. Leeds were relegated at the end of 2003/04 despite Matteo’s two goals against Fulham and Wolverhampton Wanderers.
2000
He joined Leeds United in August 2000 despite failing his medical training with the club. The following month he made his team debut against AC Milan in a UEFA Champions League competition. He was one of Leeds’ best players during their 2000/01 Champions League campaign in which they reached a semi-final spot. He is fondly remembered by Leeds fans, particularly for his goal at the San Siro against Milan in the first group stage which ensured they would advance to the next round. He joined Mick Buxton’s Sunderland on loan in March 1995 but made only one appearance in the First Division for the Black Cats, in a 2-0 loss to Barnsley at Oakwell on 24 March. It was found after the game that his loan had not been registered in time, meaning he was unable to play for Sunderland. Although he had technically been an ineligible player against Barnsley, Sunderland escaped with just a £2,500 fine.

In total he played 366 league and cup games, 276 of them in the Premier League. He was capped six times by Scotland after originally representing England at Under-21 and B-Team level.
Dominic Matteo was born in Dumfries on April 28, 1974; his father, who “wanted his boy to play like Cesare Maldini”, ran Matthew’s Cafe in Friars Vennel. His father was of Italian descent and a keen supporter of European football. The family moved to Southport in late 1978. Matteo was spotted playing for Birkdale United by Liverpool player Kenny Dalglish, who originally joined Birkdale United just to see his son Paul Dalglish. At the age of 16 he received a YTS contract. His versatility worked against him as he was asked to play multiple positions on the reserve team and subsequently failed to establish himself in one position. He did, however, impress enough to win a one-year pro deal at the age of 18. He then signed a new two-year contract in 1993.
