For Chris Rock, a return to the Oscars in 2023 would be like a return to a crime scene.

The 57-year-old comedian told an audience on a comedy show in Phoenix on Sunday that he was asked to host next year’s event, but declined.

According Republic of ArizonaThe “Everyone Hates Chris” graduate told the crowd that returning to the Oscars would be like asking Nicole Brown Simpson to “go back to the restaurant” where she left her glasses before her death, in relation to the OJ Simpson murder trial, which was acquitted in the case.

His denied host duties would come a year after Will Smith, 53, entered the stage on March 27 and slapped him at the Academy Awards for joking with his wife, Jady Pinkett Smith, for looking like “GI Jane” because of her baldness.

In May, ABC Entertainment president Craig Erich told Deadline that he was open to Rock’s return as host next year. This choice, said the director, would certainly boost the rating.

“Of course, there was a lot of controversy [surrounding this year’s broadcast]which overshadowed many of the positive things about the program, but I was really happy with the program, ”said Erich. “It was the biggest twist of any awards show this season.”

But according to Smith, Rock is still “not ready” to talk one-on-one about the 2022 clash. Instead, on July 29, the star of King Richard publicly apologized to Rock in a nearly six-minute YouTube video.

“So let me tell you, Chris, I’m sorry,” he said, apparently regretfully. “My behavior was unacceptable and I’m here whenever you’re ready to talk.”

Rock has remained silent about the incident, with the exception of a few comedy shows in recent months.

“Yeah, that little shit hurts, motherfucker – but I shook that little shit off and went to work the next day,” he stated during a performance opposite Kevin Hart and Dave Chappelle at Madison Square Garden in July. “Anyone who says ‘words hurt’ has never been punched in the face.”

“I’m not a victim, motherfucker,” said the Adult star the next day in Holmdel, NJ. “I’m not going to the hospital to cut out the paper.”

The 2023 Oscars will take place on March 12.
