Fredrick Tipton was born and raised in Gary, Indiana. He spent his childhood on the east side of town, namely around 17th and Virginia Streets. He received an athletic scholarship to play American football at Ball State University, but was ultimately expelled from the school for academic misconduct. While on trial at the age of 19 for theft and possession of a gun, he enlisted in the US Army as part of a pre-trial diversionary scheme. However, he was dishonorably discharged just eight months later after being caught using marijuana.

He then got a job at a mall in Gary where he met a local hip hop producer named Finger Roll. According to Gibbs, Finger Roll was “the only guy that had a studio”. Gibbs then joined Finger Roll’s No Tamin Entertainment team and launched a career as a rapper.

Career

2017-present: You only live twice, freddy, fatty, bandana and Alfredo

You Only Live 2wice is the title of Gibb’s third solo studio album, released in March 2017. The only single “Crushed Glass” was released simultaneously with a music video directed by Eric Nelson. Without giving any prior information, he released his fourth studio album entitled Freddie in June 2018. In October 2018, Gibbs, Currensy and The Alchemist came together to create the album Fetti, which was also a collaboration between the three.

Gibbs and Madlib’s second collaborative album, titled Bandana, was released in June 2019 after first being announced in May 2016. The album was preceded by the singles “Flat Tummy Tea” and “Bandana,” both of which featured dancehall artist Assassin, and were released in February and March of that year, respectively. The album was released through Keep Cool Records, RCA Records, Madlib Invazion and ESGN and received additional praise from reviewers upon its release.

Personal life

On November 4, 2014, a gunman opened fire on Gibbs while he was in a car in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, New York after his performance at a record store. Gibbs escaped unharmed, but two of his companions sustained non-life-threatening gunshot wounds.

In May 2015, Gibbs started GoFundMe to support Gary’s School Supply Giveaway by purchasing school supplies for children in Gary, Indiana. Gibbs said on the site’s page, “Growing up in Gary, there weren’t many opportunities for a youngster like me to succeed. Lack of access to basic materials has left many of us less motivated to do well in school and has led many of us down darker paths. In June 2016, ahead of a concert at Le Rex in Toulouse, France, Gibbs was arrested on a European arrest warrant for a rape allegedly committed in Austria in 2015 and later extradited there on suspicion of sexual assault.[58] The following month, sexual abuse charges against two women were brought against Gibbs, who said he “had no intention of evading prosecution, either in France or in Austria”.
