Leaf played for the Washington State Cougars throughout his college years, where he finished as a Heisman Trophy finalist in his junior season. He was drafted by the San Diego Chargers with the second overall pick in the 1998 NFL Draft behind Peyton Manning, but his career was disrupted by poor performance, inappropriate behavior, injuries, and issues with his work ethic and ability to focus. After the game, he appeared on the cover of the September 4, 2000 issue of Sports Illustrated with the headline “Back from the Brink”. His comeback was described in the cover article as “his rise from outcast to perhaps exceptional passer-by.” He started the first two games of the 2000 season but completed less than half of his passes and had five interceptions in just one goal. In the Oakland Raiders’ 9-6 win in the season opener on Sept. 3, Leaf completed 17 of his 39 attempts for 180 yards and three interceptions, one of which was left with a 4th-and-inch play at 1:37, ensuring the Raiders Victory.
