Amal Fashanu is one of three children born to English television presenter and former professional footballer John Fashanu. Amal is the middle child.

John played as a striker from 1978 to 1995; in addition, during his eight-year career with Wimbledon, he won the FA Cup in 1988 and scored over 100 goals in all competitions. John stopped playing in 1995.

However, Justin took his own life in March 1998 when a 17-year-old boy alleged that the athlete assaulted him after a night of drinking in March 1998. Justin’s death followed the charge. After investigating and issuing an arrest warrant, he fled the United States to England and later hanged himself in a locked garage in Fairchild Place, Shoreditch, in London.

Fashanu dismissed the charges, admitting he fled the scene because he believed his homosexuality would prevent him from getting a fair trial and because he didn’t want to be a disgrace to his friends and family. Therefore, Amal promised her uncle that she would support gay footballers until there was representation in the highest sport.

It’s likely that hearing what happened to the late footballer inspired her to advocate for LGBTQ rights and against racism in sport.
