According to NHK, the reporter at the scene heard two gunshots before Abe collapsed to the ground, bleeding profusely and clutching his chest. He was immediately taken to hospital, but firefighters told local media he was showing no signs of life at the time. A suspect in his 40s was arrested there.

At around 11:30 am, the 67-year-old former Japanese prime minister was shot dead while delivering a campaign speech outside a train station in Nara (02:30 GMT).
