American mixed martial artist Nate Diaz competes in the Ultimate Fighting Championship using the full name Nathan Donald Diaz (UFC). On September 11, 2022, he will compete in the UFC 279 Welterweight Main Event.

Diaz competed in Pancrase, Strikeforce, and World Extreme Cagefighting before joining the UFC. Since taking first place in The Ultimate Fighter 5 in 2011, he has competed in the UFC. With 15 total UFC bonuses, Diaz and Joe Lauzon rank third.

At the age of 17, Diaz competed in a bare knuckle MMA match against Robert Limon on July 20, 2002 before beginning his professional MMA career. Footage of the battle has since surfaced and is believed to be his first encounter with a competition.

When Diaz made his official MMA debut, he primarily competed in World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC). He faced Hermes França, the current WEC Lightweight Champion, at WEC 24 in 2006, but was defeated by submission in the second round. This was the last competition the WEC held before it was bought out by Zuffa, LLC, the UFC’s parent company at the time.

In The Ultimate Fighter 5, which consisted only of light fighters, Diaz competed for Jens Pulver’s team. Rob Emerson was defeated via submission in the first round, while Team Pulver partner Corey Hill was defeated via triangle choke submission in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Diaz sent Gray Maynard of Squad Penn through to the finals where he faced Manvel Gamburyan of the same team. Gamburyan retired in the second round after accidentally dislocating his right shoulder attempting a takedown, giving Diaz the victory by submission. Diaz won The Ultimate Fighter 5 with the triumph.

2008

Diaz expected tougher opponents after beating Alvin Robinson and Junior Assunço. At UFC Fight Night 13, Kurt Pellegrino was tasked with confronting him. On lap two, Diaz submitted Pellegrino with a triangle choke. Diaz had time to bend down for the fans and raise two middle fingers before Pellegrino relented when the choke locked. Veteran Josh Neer was then defeated by Diaz via split decision in the main event of UFC Fight Night 15.

2018

On August 3, 2018, it was announced that Diaz would be making a comeback after a two-year hiatus on November 3 in a lightweight bout against Dustin Poirier. This match should be the collective event for UFC 230. On October 9, 2018, it was announced that Poirier had dropped out due to injury, causing the fight to be abandoned.

2019

Nate Diaz returned to action at UFC 241 on August 17. He faced Anthony Pettis in the welterweight co-main event. He outclassed his opponent and prevailed unanimously.

On November 2, 2019, Diaz and Jorge Masvidal faced off in the main event of UFC 244. In unusual circumstances, UFC President Dana White announced that the main event match was for a “Baddest Motherfucker” (or “BMF”) belt. A cut above Diaz’s right eye meant he was unable to continue, and after outplaying most of the fight, Diaz lost by TKO between rounds three and four.

2021

On May 15, 2021, Diaz was scheduled to face Leon Edwards at UFC 262. This was the first time a non-main event and non-title fight was scheduled for 5 rounds. However, the fight was rescheduled to UFC 263 due to a minor injury suffered by Diaz and ended up lasting five rounds. Edwards dominated the fight the overwhelming majority of the time, but late in the fifth round strikes seriously terrified him. Edwards prevailed by unanimous decision (49–46, 49–46, 49–46).

2022

Diaz will face Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 279 on September 10, 2022.

Personal life

Nick Diaz, a UFC professional MMA competitor, is Diaz’s brother. Both the Diaz brothers support the legalization of marijuana, and California Finest even makes a line of pre-rolls under license. They founded the CBD company Game Up Nutrition and now own Nick Diaz Academy, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu school in Stockton, California. He has been vegan since he was 18, but occasionally eats fish.
