Royal family members wept in public on Saturday, reading heartfelt tributes to Queen Elizabeth II.

The family, who have stayed at Balmoral Castle since the monarch’s death at 96 on Thursday, traveled to the nearby Crathie Kirk Church to attend a weekend prayer service.

The family spent less than 10 minutes reading the tributes and admiring the bouquets of flowers left outside for the late Queen Elizabeth.

Princess Eugenie wept as she looked at the tributes to her grandmother. At one point, photographers noticed that she was comforted by her father, Prince Andrew, who looked clearly distraught.

Earlier that day, Eugenia – joined by her sister, Princess Beatrice – laid her own flowers among bouquets.

The Queen’s eldest granddaughter, Zara Tindall, was also present and cried out with members of her immediate family, including her mother, Princess Anna, and her brother, Peter Phillips.

The youngest son of the late monarch, Prince Edward, was also present with his wife Sophie Wessex and daughter Lady Louise Windsor.

Edward thanked the kind people who had set up a route back to Balmoral. Hearing one group had come from Glasgow to show their respect, he said, “Thank you so much for coming, we appreciate it.”

Sophie, who was widely known for her close relationship with the Queen, also looked clearly distraught as she looked at the floral tributes and cards.

In an address to the Privy Council, the newly anointed king paid tribute to his mother.

“My mother’s government was second to none in terms of duration, sacrifice and dedication,” he said. Even in mourning, we thank you for this most faithful life. I am deeply aware of this great heritage and the obligations and heavy responsibilities of sovereignty that have now passed onto me. “
