2022 season

McCarthy and Cade McNamara battled for the starting quarterback position for Michigan ahead of the 2022 season. McCarthy eventually won the job. Jim Harbaugh, the head coach of the Michigan football team, made an announcement before the first game of the season that the competition for the starting quarterback position is close and will continue for at least the first two games. He said McNamara will start against Colorado State in week one, and McCarthy will start against Hawaii in week two.

McCarthy sat out the first half of the game against Hawaii and led the Wolverines to a 42-0 halftime lead. He completed 11 of 12 passes for 229 yards and three touchdowns in his time on the field. In his postgame press conference, Harbaugh announced that McCathy would start the next game, against UConn. He also said, “He is the starter who advances on merit.”
