Telfar Clemens

The Humble Beginnings of Telfar Clemens

Clemens was born in Lefrak City, Queens, in the year 1985. He was born in the US, but his family is from Liberia. His parents were born in Liberia and immigrated to the US in search of better opportunities. Shortly after Telfar was born, his family returned to their home country. However, five years later, in 1990, they returned to the United States to get away from the civil war raging in their home country.

Her journey with the Telar brand is full of stories that are both exciting and inspiring. One of these stories goes back to when he was in school and led to the creation of the Telfar brand logo. He wanted to start a business under his name when he was young.

Clemens attended high school at PS 195 in New York. In class 206, her teacher made monograms for each student. The teacher gave Clemens a stamp, which later became a symbol of the brand. As a student at Pace University in 2005, Clemens started his label Telfar, which produces clothing for both men and women. In 2008, he earned his degree from Pace University.

In his career as a fashion designer, Telfar Clemens has won many awards

Clemens won the 2017 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund, which awarded her $400,000, most of which she used to create the Telfar Shopping Bag. Telfar was selected by Queerty as one of fifty heroes who promote equality, acceptance, and decency for all people in the United States. It will happen in June 2020, which is also the 50th anniversary of the first LGBTQ Pride parade.

In September 2020, Clemens won the CFDA and was named American Accessories Designer of the Year. People have given him a lot of support over the years because of how humble he is and how he treats his clients. His brand is one of the fastest growing businesses in recent years, and they plan to open more stores and websites across the country soon.

Telfar Clemens’ display of designer bags surprised everyone

Instead of putting on a show at New York Fashion Week, the company chose to be more open-minded. Its first handbag-only pop-up store in downtown Brooklyn on Sunday afternoon slowed traffic and gave shoppers a chance to shop the trendy design in person.

Rainbow, a fast-fashion chain with stores across the country, partnered with Telfar Clemens to set up the pop-up shop. The Rainbow on Fulton Street has been completely cleared to make room for Telfar bags of all shapes and sizes. This made the two floors of the store look like a rainbow of accessories.

Thousands waited in line to buy up to five bags in the size and color they wanted. Up to 100 people can enter the store at once, every 10 minutes. It caused a Supermarket Sweep-style frenzy right away. Clemens spent the afternoon waving to his followers from the Rainbow’s second floor window.

At the pop-up, Telfar staff and friends wore special collaboration T-shirts to honor the Rainbow partnership, but it’s not yet clear if those clothes will be sold. Next, on September 23, anyone who can’t make it to Brooklyn will be able to drop off their Rainbow bags on Clemens’ company website.

In September 2016, artists Ryan Trecartin and Lizzie Fitch created a video to accompany Clemens and Radboy’s installation at the Berlin Biennale.

In May 2017, musician Solange Knowles and Clemens collaborated to design costumes for Knowles and her dancers for “An Ode To,” an interdisciplinary performance at the Guggenheim Museum in New York City where no telephones.

As of September 2017, Clemens has created uniforms for 400 White Castle franchises. In October of 2017, Clemens created a special capsule collection with White Castle. All money from the collection went to bail for teenagers incarcerated at Rikers Island.

In February 2019, Telfar presented his Fall Winter 2019 collection at Irving Plaza in New York City. It was an exclusive event for black futures month, with 1000 guests, a mosh pit for a runway (the models crowd-surfed through the audience instead of walking a runway), and live stage music.

At the fashion show, co-hosted by playwright Jeremy O. Harris, musicians Ho99o9, Na-Kel Smith, Oyinda, Butch Dawson, and designer Clemens himself played the music.

In early 2020, Clemens said he would be working with Gap Inc. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the collection was stopped in March 2020.

Telfar started the Bag Security Program in August 2020. It’s a one-day online event where anyone can pre-order bags for guaranteed holiday delivery the same year. “I created the bag security program so that people can get what they are looking for. We just want to know, “If we really give people a chance to get this bag, how many bags can we sell in a day?” Clemens said. Since then, there have been two more Bag Security Programs, both in 2021.

In September 2020, Clemens released a line of durags. Shortly after, Clemens said he would be working with UGG on a project that will come out in the fall of 2021.

In 2021, a large American store called GUESS produced a bag that looked like the Telfar Shopping Bag but with the G-logo instead of the Telfar brand. Guess’ licensee for handbags, Signal Brands, has removed the G-logo from shelves and said in a statement, “Signal Brands does not want to hinder the success of Telfar Global, so it has decided on its own stop selling G -logo items.”
