Review of Mat Kilau: A Malaysian Patriotic Film That Raise Questions

Mat Kilau is now on Netflix. It is a Malaysian patriotic film about the struggle for independence from British colonialism. It’s action-packed, but it also raises a lot of questions. Syamsul Yusof directs the film with Adi Putra, Beto Kusyairy, Fattah Amin, Yayan Ruhian and others.

The film’s plot is about Malaysian historical figure Mat Kilau, who fought British colonists in Pahang before independence.

Like many patriotic films, Mat Kilau begins by showing how cruel the colonizers were to the natives. There is an English officer with guns who is ruthless and the soldiers around him do whatever he says.

The film also has selfish traitors, jealous subordinates, politics among the nobles and so on because it’s difficult to make these types of films without things that make people angry.

Coming back to the Sikh soldiers surrounding it, this has caused people in the community to take a closer look at the film, and it doesn’t seem to live up to the historical facts either. While this film is made for Malays, it may not be for everyone else.

The film follows the hero’s journey as he fights the British soldiers and tries to get those around him to fight just as hard. And I have to say that the Malaysian martial arts scenes were very impressive and fun to watch.

The film will definitely give Malaysians a patriotic feeling and it will be fun for everyone else to watch as well. But people will also say bad things about it because of things like the Sikh soldiers and the way the story is messed up.

All in all a funny film with historical characters that also takes some liberties with the truth for the sake of the story. People will like the fight scene because it’s different from what we usually see, but it’s hard to say the same about the story.

And the ending isn’t very satisfying; It’s more of a bad cliffhanger for a second book.

The film is fun as long as you don’t disturb some things. It’s perfect for people who want to see a patriotic movie. But you don’t have to look at it.

I have mixed feelings about the film and I don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings by telling them to skip it.

The events of the novel take place in 1892, although the Pahang region was still ruled by British colonial authorities at the time. This happened three years before the founding of the Federated Malay States.

By collecting taxes from retailers, taking parents’ crops, and interfering with their customs and spiritual beliefs, the British had exploited the wealth of the agricultural produce of the Pahang Malays. This allowed the British to benefit from the wealth of the Malays.

The Malay population in Pahang is now moving towards the British as a result of the British movement being undertaken without their consent.

In order to protect Pahang, his homeland and Malaya from further occupation, Mat Kilau, a Malayan warrior, waged a bitter struggle against the British government along with his father Tok Gajah and friends. They act this way because they have to defend Pahang and Malaya at the same time.

As Mat Kilau and Tok Gajah developed an artistic resistance strategy that eventually led to horrifying wrestling, the British found themselves in a situation of conflict and stress.

Adi Putra plays Mat Kilau bin Imam Rasu, a Malaysian warrior who fought against the British colonialists during the Pahang Rebellion in pre-independence Pahang, British Malaya, in Syamsul Yusof’s 2022 biographical epic story Mat Kilau: Kebangkitan Pahlawan. The film is called Mat Kilau: The Rise of a Warrior. The numerous cast members who play supporting roles throughout the film include Beto Kusyairy, Fattah Amin, Yayan Ruhian, Geoff Andre Feyaerts and Johan As’ari.

The backdrop for the film is 1892, when the Pahang regions were under British colonial rule. Rahman Dali, Shahruddin Dali and Yusof Haslam have been credited with producing the film. Photoshooting reportedly began in 2018 and will be completed in 2021. As co-producers, Studio Kembara Sdn Bhd and Skop Productions Sdn Bhd were involved in all aspects of the film’s production.

The official poster of Mat Kilau: Kebangkitan Pahlawan was released on May 13, 2022, while the official trailer for the film was released to the public on June 16, 2022. The film screening ceremony was held at the Golden Screen Cinemas (GSC) on the same day. The majority of the population first saw the film on June 23, 2022.

The film was a smash hit at the box office. The film cost RM8 million to produce, but after just 40 days in theaters it had amassed RM96 million, making it the highest-grossing Malaysian film of all time.

Kebangkitan Pahlawan, which was also the first film directed but not starred by Syamsul Yusof, was the first film directed but not acted by Syamsul Yusof. In August 2017, he announced that he would be directing a major film that would likely focus on the illustrious past of national heroes. After a multitude of production companies and filmmakers allegedly failed to complete the historical film and the fight for Mat Kilau, he had previously agreed to work on the screenplay. He had previously taken responsibility for working on the writing.

On March 8, 2018, Syamsul announced that he may direct a historical biographical film about Mat Kilau, a Malayan warrior who fought for British authority in Pahang, at the KL Special Forces Film Gala, held in Petaling Jaya. The life of Mat Kilau will be the subject of the film.

The film’s official first day of shooting was April 1, 2018, although due to a number of unavoidable circumstances, production had to be suspended for a while. Singaporean actor Adi Putra plays a role of Mat Kilau throughout the collection. According to Syamsul, Adi was chosen to play the main character because of his ability to animate the role and because Syamsul was confident that Adi, an accomplished actor, would successfully take on the role.

Production on the film was put on hold in August 2018 due to production-related issues. However, it was reinstated in October 2018. It was reported that filming was almost complete in June 2020, then it was reported again in February 2021 that filming had completed but the COVID-19 pandemic necessitated the film premiere being postponed.

On May 15, 2022, the actual cost of completing the film was found to be RM8 million. This disclosure took place on May 15, 2022. Filming of the film took a total of 100 days and although part of it was shot in Perak state, other sequences were also shot in Pahang, Melaka and Selangor.
