Adnan Syed was released from prison.

Baltimore judge overturns 41-year-old man’s 1999 murder of ex-girlfriend Hye Min Lee— which crime was famous on the popular true crime podcast Serial.

Sept. 19, City District Court Judge Melissa Finn ruled that prosecutors had made a compelling case that Syed’s conviction was erroneous, pursuant to NBC News. The judge ruled that the state had breached its legal obligation to share evidence that could support Syed’s defense.

After dismissing murder, kidnapping, robbery and false imprisonment, Judge Finn ordered Syed, who has spent more than two decades behind bars, released on bond and placed under house arrest.

The judge also gave prosecutors 30 days to start a new trial or drop the case entirely.

Following the ruling, the Maryland Attorney General Brian E. Frosh released a statement saying the allegation of withholding evidence from the defense was “incorrect”.

“Among other serious issues with the motion to dismiss, the allegations of Brady violations are false,” the statement said. “Not the state prosecutor [Marilyn] Mosby no one from her office bothered to consult with the Assistant State’s Attorney who handled the case or anyone in my office regarding these alleged violations. The materials of this case were repeatedly provided to the defense.”
