Mahimananda Mishra’s shop

BHUBANESWAR: Police are investigating whether it would be legal to confiscate Mishra’s property on suspicion that business tycoon Mahimananda Mishra has illicitly amassed enormous amounts of money. Mishra was arrested in Bangkok on December 25 last year for allegedly plotting the October 26 murder of Mahendra Swain, a Seaways Shipping executive. At least 13 criminal cases against Mishra have so far been uncovered by Paradeep police in the Jagatsinghpur area. On December 25 last year, Mishra was taken into custody and subsequently charged with this alleged crime.

Mishra, the owner of Orissa Stevedores Limited (OSL), is said to have assets worth more than Rs 10,000. We have already frozen his bank accounts, which contain deposits totaling more than 5 million rupees. We are investigating the situation with legal advice to see if we can seize all of his assets, including his other bank accounts. We firmly believe that he acquired most of his wealth through immoral methods. Although he worked in several companies, stevedoring was his main occupation. He confiscated numerous contracts for forced carriage of cargo. “It was made clear by the Swain murder that Seaways Shipping became a major threat to its business and monopoly,” said a senior police official who spoke to TOI.

Mahima Mishra’s accusations

The police recently presented their convincing case diary in the district and hearing court against Mishra, who had a lot of influence in the police force and in the corridor of power. Mishra was never arrested or found guilty of a crime, although he was accused of involvement in illegal activities as early as 1995. He was arrested in May 1998 in connection with the killing of trade union leader Bichitrananda Mallick but was eventually released on bail.

“We explained to the court how he built his business empire and how it thrived despite being involved in numerous lawsuits. The officer said: “We’re keeping our fingers crossed that the judge will deny him bail.

According to the case diary kept by police, Mishra made a series of unusual cash withdrawals from his company accounts totaling nearly Rs 80,000 between the months of August and September last year. “We have strong suspicions that he was in possession of the enormous amount of money needed to carry out Swain’s murder,” the officer said.

In a related development, the neighborhood police department is expected to request Mishra’s detention for questioning in relation to a complaint filed against him in February 2016. Mancheswar Police had opened a case against Mishra, his colleague Basant Bal, and Congress politician Arindam Sarkhel, aka Bapi, based on a complaint from Mishra’s rival businessman Pranakrushna Nayak. On February 26, 2016, Nayak claimed the three bombed his home. As a result of the complaint, proceedings were initiated against all three. Bal and Sarkhel were both arrested in connection with the investigation into Swain’s death. Bal received medical attention at the SCB medical center in Cuttack while being held by the police, while Sarkhel is still being held by the court.

Mahima Mishra, the Jagatsinghpur District and Session Magistrate, reportedly filed a new request for bail on Friday, according to Nalinikanta Moharana, the court’s prosecutor. Prior to their arrest, Mahima and Basant Bal, the director of OSL, applied to the Orissa High Court for anticipatory relief.

However, the Supreme Court declined to grant them temporary protection.
