The Boston Celtics were founded as a franchise in the Basketball Association of America on June 6, 1946 by Walter A. Brown, president of Boston Garden-Arena Corporation. The team then joined the National Basketball Association after the BAA absorbed the National Basketball League in the fall of 1949.

The Celtics selected Chuck Cooper in 1950, making them the first NBA team to select a player of color. The Celtics were founded in 1946 by Chuck Connors, better known as The Rifleman.
