Athena Plot Summary

The first events of “Athena” take place after the death of Idir, a Muslim child who hails from a suburb of Paris. The neighborhood reacts violently to the news of his death, and the already tense situation quickly escalates to a more dangerous level. Abdel, Idir’s older brother, is a distinguished soldier who served in the armed forces. He uses diplomatic means to resolve the issue and entrusts the authorities with investigating the circumstances of his brother’s death. However, there is reason to believe that police officers were involved in the murder of Idir, which is the main source of hatred in the community.

Karim, Idir’s other brother, leads a group of rebels during the demonstrations and steals firearms from the police using Molotov cocktail bombs. During this time the demonstrations take place. The insurgents have taken refuge on the Athena Estate, armed themselves and shown an extreme reaction to Idir’s death. Karim seeks help from his eldest brother, Mokhtar, who works as a drug dealer in the area. Mokhtar, on the other hand, only takes care of his drug deals and refuses to take a position on anything. Elsewhere, Abdel is leading the evacuation of civilians from a nearby town hall. Abdel’s mother doesn’t know where her son Karim is now, so she asked Abdel to look after him.

Idir was killed when police officers beat him with batons while he was lying on the ground, according to a news item broadcast on TV. The investigation conducted by the police raises the possibility that the people who arrested and abused Idir were not actually officers of the force. In fact, they are members of a small far-right organization that is at the epicenter of the anarchy that has taken place in the Athena social area. Meanwhile, Karim and his comrades are holding a policeman named Jerome hostage. The rebels want the cops responsible for Idir’s death in exchange for Jerome. Abdel makes Karim an offer to negotiate, but the cops tell him to back down and stop negotiating. They have also threatened to arrest Abdel if she doesn’t follow police instructions.

Despite this, Abdel goes to the Athena Manor hoping to talk it over with Karim and find a peaceful solution to the problem. Abdel and Karim eventually get into an altercation, and Abdel takes advantage of the situation to elope with Jerome. Mokhtar is the one Abdel is asking for help now that the police and rebels are looking for him. Abdel is given lodging by Mokhtar, much to Mokhtar’s displeasure. During the trial, Mokhtar reveals to Abdel that he is Abdel’s half-brother. In order to have his file deleted, Abdel contacts the authorities and offers to extradite Jerome. On the other hand, Karim and his rebels get on the scene before the police, leading to a bloody brawl. Abdel sides with the rebels and fights for justice for Idir’s death as a result of the dramatic turn of events.

Athena ending: Why does Abdel join the rebels? Is Abdel dead?

During the handover to the police, Karim and his rebel force attempt to capture Jerome. Kaim doesn’t want Abdel to accompany Jerome to the police station. The group led by Karim launches a vicious attack and threatens to completely destroy the establishment with their Molotov cocktail bombs. They continue to try to release Jerome, despite the fact that the police have refused to comply with Karim and his friends’ demands. As a result, Karim deploys a Molotov cocktail explosive. However, Karim is shot dead by the police before he can fire the device at them, and the bomb explodes on him in the process.

As a result of the explosion, Karim loses his life, which has a significant impact on Abdel. The older brother is devastated by the death of another sibling, and as a result, his sense of right and wrong begins to shift. The traumatic experience of Idir’s death affects Abdel, and Karim’s death makes him realize the evil that exists within the police force. As a direct result, Abdel comes to the conclusion that he must take up arms to seek retribution for the murders of his brothers Idir and Karim. As a result, Abdel makes the decision to side with the insurgents and succeeds Karim as leader of the group. The community’s distrust of law enforcement is evident in Abdel’s change of allegiance, which is a sign that anarchy is spreading in the Athena estate. Additionally, this shows how the community views police enforcement.

After taking command of the insurgents, Abdel persists in his refusal to extradite Jerome. Before releasing Jerome, he urges the authorities to extradite Idir’s killer. In the course of negotiations with the police, Abdel finds out that those responsible for the murder are not officials but members of a right-wing extremist organization. Abdel, on the other hand, does not trust them and warns Jerome that he will kill him if his demands are not met. Sebastian, a member of the insurgents, prepares to detonate a bomb in the building where Abdel and the other insurgents are hiding with Jerome.

Once the cops come, Abdel understands his plan will never succeed. As a direct result, Abdel allows Jerome to leave and remains in the structure until it explodes. Abdel is unable to seek justice for his siblings despite having lost his moral sense. As a result of his plan failing, Abdel makes the decision to end his life with his brothers, leading to a horrific resolution of the family dispute. Abdel’s assassination is a symbol of the failure of the judicial authorities and draws attention to the inequalities that exist in law and order. In the end, the socio-political issues force Abdel, a highly decorated military officer, to be drawn into the chaos and disorder they create.

How did Idir die? who killed him

The circumstances of Idir’s death are never explained in detail throughout the narrative. The residents of the Athena estate react violently to his death because of the tension he caused between them. The film’s conclusion provides conclusive evidence of how Idir met its end. In this scene, a number of police officers are seen punching and kicking Idir. The little boy was severely beaten by the authorities and then left to die. After some time we see the group take off their police uniforms and then burn them. The scene gives the impression that the people were not police officers, which is consistent with the assumption made by the police department.

As the men leave the scene, a tattoo seen on their necks provides further evidence that they are members of the far-right gang suspected of being responsible for Idir’s death. As a result, the film’s finale reveals that Idir’s assassination was the direct result of a hate crime committed against the community. The film does not go into detail about the struggle taking place within the local community; Rather, the anarchic situation of Athena Estate is reminiscent of the current socio-political disagreements taking place around the world, particularly in France in relation to the Muslim community.

The film’s ending makes it clear that the cause of Idir’s death was the hatred fomented in the nation as a direct result of political problems. On the other hand, Idir’s death is just the spark that plunges the community as a whole into violent outbursts. Tension levels are already heightened and it is possible that they will increase as a right-wing group spreads hatred and manipulates events to create disharmony among the population. As a result, the film offers some social commentary on the current police situation and the tensions that have arisen as a direct result of interactions between law enforcement agencies and citizens across the country. Furthermore, since the source of the high voltages in Athena Manor is not specifically addressed in the film, the result is a depiction of the most unsettling and terrifying path humanity can take when there is no trust.
