Coss Marte enjoyed the good life in New York until 2009, making a fortune as a drug lord. But his incarceration in a federal prison and subsequent arrest changed everything. Coss Marte: Who is He?

When Coss Marte’s mother was six months pregnant, his parents moved from the Dominican Republic to the US. Coss was a good student and received high grades as he grew up. But when he first tried marijuana at the age of 11, he realized that he could easily make money selling drugs. So Coss began selling marijuana and cocaine as he had planned.

Coss excelled in both academics and sports at the same time and eventually received a scholarship to a boarding school in Rhode Island. He said, “I believe that selling drugs is not a terrible thing. I started selling narcotics to the students there. I assumed it was just a way of life. People were working doing it. Coss was eventually found high on ecstasy in his room and then taken to a rehab center where his partner showed him how to make crack cocaine.

Coss’s family begged him to stop dealing drugs, but he refused. After just one semester, Coss was expelled from SUNY-Albany in New York. Soon he started earning around $3,000 a day from selling drugs. Then, he takes over when one of his cocaine sources retires, and things escalate. To prevent the police from discovering his cache during a raid, Coss teamed up with other dealers and created a sophisticated drug-dealing structure.

Coss eventually had his men deliver drugs by bicycle and then by rental car. To reduce the suspicion of the police, he even made them wear suits. Coss was making nearly $2 million a year from his heroin deals when he was 19 years old. However, Coss received a 7-year term after being caught once with cocaine and crack inside his jacket. But it made little difference because he managed his empire from behind bars until he was released four years later.

Coss had a son with an on-and-off partner when he was 22. Then, during an undercover investigation, federal investigators arrested Coss in March 2009. Before it was reduced to seven years, he was given he a 12-year term. He was married to the mother of his child at the time. Coss was morbidly obese when he began his prison term, and the doctor warned him that if he didn’t make changes in his lifestyle, he would die within five years.

Coss then began to exercise with the tools he had at hand. He did everything he could in his prison cell to be active and lose weight, except living on canned tuna. Coss lost 70 pounds over the next six months as a result of his efforts. He was motivated to improve himself because of his son. Along with helping herself, Coss shared her fitness routine with other inmates to help them lose weight.

Now, where is Coss Marte?

Coss spent four years in prison before being released in 2013. He continued his regimen thereafter and eventually launched CONBODY in 2014. To create a boot camp environment reminiscent of a prison, Coss uses the ex-offender to teach exercise sessions. Coss has been a supporter of the incarcerated for the past few years thanks to his foundation of the same name. More than 70,000 people have been his customers, and he has worked with many prisoners.

In addition to CONBODY, Coss recently launched CONBUD, a marijuana dispensary business in New York. He aims to give ex-prisoners a second chance by hiring them as employees. Coss, who now lives in New York, previously spent two years after his parole working as a resume writer. Second Chance Studios was also co-founded by Coss. It’s a nonprofit digital media organization that wants to educate and hire ex-offenders.

Coss said, “The fellowship program pairs participants with seasoned industry mentors and provides technical, life, professional, and soft skills to adapt to the needs of returning citizens to retrain for in well-paying positions in fields such as podcasting and video production. We intend to use the fellows to produce content for CONBUD so that people who have served time in prison can get jobs in different areas of the company. Coss and his wife Roxie recently welcomed a new child into the world.
