Review and Recap: Interview with the Vampire – Season 1 Episode 1

In the first episode of Interview with the Vampire, Daniel Molloy, a journalist, is introduced. He got a package in the mail from an old friend, well known in his profession. There are tapes and letters written by Louis de Pointe Du Lac inside.

Daniel pulls out his old boombox and plays a tape that reveals that the man in question is indeed a vampire. The letter shows that he has been following Daniel’s success throughout the year and gives him some insight since their last conversation.

Louis wants Daniel to finish the job they started together within a week. They last shared a room in San Francisco 49 years ago, but this time was different. Louis will share his complete life story this time.

When Daniel accepts Louis’ offer, the latter mentions Daniel’s old age and Parkinson’s disease. The fact that almost no one knows about his illness seems to confirm their closeness, but there is also a lot of history between them and an underlying tension. When the interview begins, we travel back to Storyville, New Orleans, in 1910.

Louis had intentions of inheriting his father’s “pleasure” business at the time. In essence, Louis is a pimp and his father runs a chain of brothels. He pulls a knife on his priest brother Paul when he tries to pray in front of one of Louis’ nightclubs, proving there’s trouble around every corner. He wasn’t really going to mess with his brother, but it was a small way for him to assert his dominance.

Lestat De Lionheart, a recent visitor to town, also noticed this little work, and when the two crossed paths, he wondered about Louis’ work.

Lestat accuses Louis of selling him a townhouse, provoking the latter by putting his hands all over Miss Lily (whom Louis loves). Despite his growing anger, Louis seems unmoved and seems to be under Lestat’s influence.

Lestat shows equal amounts of whitewashing and admiration by believing that Louis is his destiny. But this strange, charming man was more than a hypnotist. He seems to be killing time just chatting with Louis while playing cards. “I think this city offers a lot of possibilities.” He said while grinning. I’ll need protection from wolves to get it, though.

After this, the two began to be side by side, naturally at night, as Louis told Daniel how Lestat charmed him. They work together in unity. Louis begins to talk to Lestat about his problems and fears without realizing that the vampire is chasing him and looking lovingly at his neck.

Lestat arrives for dinner where he is questioned about his relationship with Louis and tries to please the family by giving them gifts. However, Paul does not like her and wants to know what her spiritual status is.

Lestat is quick to point out that vampires don’t exactly have a relationship with Christ under the guise of a troubled past of humiliation and beatings, as we know from the old stories. “I and Christ are separated by the ocean.” At Paul, he snarled. Louis manages to diffuse the situation by slamming his hand on the dining room table, and their relationship continues.

So Louis and Lestat are seen together in a Pleasure House in the following scenario. As things heated up and intensified, Lestat ended up biting Louis’ neck while he was completely naked. This isn’t Brokeback Mountain; the couple uncomfortably soars in the air and holds each other tightly (no pun intended). After having some alcohol—not enough to kill him or turn him into a vampire—Lestat lets him go.

This act disturbs Louis and is familiar to him at the same time. But it also gives Louis a chance to open up—just a little. In the mid-1910s, in New Orleans, an openly gay black man could not be with people.

Louis talks to Paul on the roof about his future and his business interests after deciding to cut ties with Lestat. Before curiously turning to the rising sun and jumping off the roof to end his life, Paul names Lestat the devil.

Louis never sees another sunrise, and unfortunately, Lestat takes advantage of his sadness to control Louis. Louis chose not to attend the wake because his mother accused him of causing Paul’s death. However, despite choosing to grieve alone, Louis is called to visit Lestat. Lestat is not far behind Louis, who escapes long enough to get to the church and confess his wrongdoings.

He set fire to the building and started the fire before headbutting the priest to death.

Lestat confesses his love to Louis and says that when they first met, he noticed the sadness in his eyes when they were alone and by the flickering light of the fire. He is able to disarm the afflicted spirit by promising to end his suffering. Louis then agrees to become a vampire.

The Episode Review

With stunning photography, great characters, and a clever premise, Interview With The Vampire gets off to a fantastic start. This classic has been given a nice modern twist, however, I understand that some people might not like that. Additionally, the episode begins with a banal reminder of the pandemic that serves no purpose. Fortunately, a consistent, hypnotic beat builds for the rest of the chapter.

Louis is easy to relate to, and he has a magnetic appeal that piques your interest in his background. Her relationships with Lestat will be the high point of the season, especially if the teaser preview for this year’s events is to be believed.

The first episode effectively sets the stage with significant background research completed and a strong idea at work. Although vampires are not particularly novel in this medium, the way this narrative is handled breathes new life into the genre.
