Flashback & Review: Interview with the Vampire – Season 1 Episode 1

In the first episode of Interview with the Vampire, Daniel Molloy, a journalist, is introduced. He gets a package in the mail from an old buddy who is well-known in his profession. Inside are cassettes and a letter from Louis de Pointe Du Lac.

Daniel pulls out his old boom box and plays a tape revealing that the man in question is in fact a vampire. The letter reveals that he has been following Daniel’s success over the years and has given him some perspective since their last conversation.

Louis wants Daniel to finish the job they started together in a week. They were last together in a room in San Francisco 49 years ago, but this time will be different. Louis will share his complete life story this time.

When Daniel accepts Louis’ offer, he notices that Daniel is advanced in age and has Parkinson’s disease. The fact that almost no one is aware of their illness seems to validate their closeness, but there’s also a lot of history between them and an underlying tension. As the interview begins, we travel back to Storyville, New Orleans, in 1910.

Louis at this time had every intention of inheriting his father’s “pleasure business”. Essentially, Louis is a pimp and his father runs a chain of brothels. When he tries to pray outside one of Louis’ nightclubs, he pulls a knife on his priest brother Paul, proving that there’s trouble around every corner. He won’t really buck his sibling, but it’s a small way for him to assert his dominance.

Lestat De Lionheart, a recent visitor to town, also notices this small deed, and when the two subsequently cross paths, he gushes about Louis’ job.

Lestat accuses Louis of selling him a townhouse, provoking the latter by laying his hands all over Miss Lily (for whom Louis has affection). Despite his growing anger, Louis appears immobile and appears to be under the influence of Lestat.

Lestat shows equal measure of emasculation and admiration by believing that Louis is his destiny. But this strange, fascinating man is more than just a hypnotist. He seems to stop time while conversing only with Louis during a card game. “I think this city offers a lot of possibilities.” He says with a grin. However, I need protection from the wolves to take it.

Afterwards, the two hang out, at night of course, while Louis tells Daniel how Lestat charmed him. They work harmoniously together. Louis begins talking to Lestat about his problems and fears, not realizing that the vampire is after him, lovingly eyeing his neck.

Lestat shows up for dinner, where he is questioned about his relationship with Louis and tries to cheer up the family with gifts. However, Paul does not like him and wants to know what his spiritual status is.

Lestat is quick to point out that under cover of a troubled past of humiliation and beatings, vampires don’t exactly have a close relationship with Christ, as we know from ancient tales. “Christ and I are separated by an ocean.” He growls at Paul. Louis manages to defuse the situation by slamming his hand on the dining table and their relationship continues.

So much so that in the following scenario, Louis and Lestat are seen together at a pleasure house. As things get heated and intense, Lestat ends up biting Louis on the neck while he’s completely naked. This isn’t Brokeback Mountain; the pair rise uncomfortably in the air and hold themselves stiff (no pun intended). After drinking a small amount of alcohol – not enough to kill him or turn him into a vampire – Lestat lets him go.

This act disturbs Louis and at the same time intimately arouses him. But it also gives Louis a chance to open up – just a little. In mid-1910, an openly gay black man in New Orleans was not well received by the population.

Louis talks to Paul on the rooftop about his future and business interests after deciding to sever his relationship with Lestat. Before Paul turns curiously to the rising sun and jumps off the roof to end his life, Paul calls Lestat the devil.

Louis never saw a sunrise again and unfortunately Lestat takes advantage of his sadness to take control of Louis. Louis decides not to attend the wake because his mother blames him for causing Paul’s death. Despite deciding to mourn alone, Louis is called to visit Lestat. Lestat is not far behind Louis, who escapes long enough to make it to the church and confess his wrongdoing.

He burns the building down and starts a fire before beating the priest to death in the head.

Lestat confesses his love to Louis and says that when they first met he noticed sadness in his eyes while they were alone and in the flickering light of the flames. He is able to disarm the afflicted spirit by promising to remove its affliction. Louis then agrees to be turned into a vampire.

The Episode Analysis

With stunning photography, lovable characters, and a clever premise, Interview With The Vampire is off to a fantastic start. This classic has been given a good modern twist but I understand some people might not like that. Additionally, the episode begins with a stark reminder of the pandemic that serves no purpose whatsoever. Luckily, a consistent, hypnotic beat develops for the rest of the chapter.

Louis is a character who is easy to relate to and he has a magnetic pull that will keep you interested in his background. His relationship with Lestat will be the highlight of the season, especially if the teaser previews for this year’s events are to be believed.

The first episode effectively sets the stage with extensive background research completed and a strong working idea. Although vampires are not particularly novel in this media, the way this narrative is handled brings new life to the genre.
