Why did Max and Helen split up?

Helen writes a letter to Max to make amends and explain why she left their wedding while they were walking down the aisle. In the letter, Helen makes it abundantly clear that even she doesn’t understand why it was necessary for her to break up with him. The only thing Helen can give Max is the honest truth, which is that the reason for their breakup cannot be explained. Helen is brave enough to follow her instincts and end a relationship with someone she cares about, despite knowing how necessary it is. However, one thing she can’t do is align words to explain the motivation behind them.

Over the course of their relationship, Max and Helen face a number of obstacles. Perhaps the most important factor is Helen’s strong desire to settle permanently in London. Helen is aware that Max’s life takes place in New York, although he is willing to go to London with her without a second thought. Helen must have felt an unimaginable pressure to see him change the very foundations of his existence, especially considering Max would be taking Luna to London from where Luna’s mother had lived and died. Helen must have wished for Max to continue his life in New York and breaking up the partnership may have been the price to pay.

Furthermore, it is possible that Helen wanted to live a life that she had created for herself. Helen may find herself in an unnecessary debt position due to Max’s involvement in the same. Helen has spent her entire life allowing other people, especially her mother, to dictate her behavior in one way or another. Helen may decide that she wants to break this pattern to be more independent when she moves to London, even if it means separating herself from Max’s presence and support. All of these arguments and considerations must have accumulated over time to prevent Helen from getting involved with Max in the form of marriage, ultimately paving the way for the two to end their relationship.

Though Helen doesn’t provide an explanation at this point, it’s possible we’ll find out what it is in one of the next few episodes of season five. “It’s not entirely clear why her [Helen] left of that letter, and I think that’s potentially something we’ll get into later,” Max actor Ryan Eggold told TVLine. “I think maybe we’ll get into that later.” As Eggold said, it might take Helen some time to gather her thoughts and try to understand the situation in order to directly communicate the reasons why she and Max had to separate. Until then, Max would most likely try not to get bogged down in the past. It’s possible that his developing friendship with Dr. Elizabeth Wilder helps him deal with the hole Helen’s absence will leave in his life.

Since Freema Agyeman, who played Helen on the show, left after the end of season four, the medical drama’s writers may have concluded that it was necessary for Max and Helen to end their relationship. As a result of the couple’s decision to go their separate ways, they now have a chance to explore the possibility of writing a love story with Max and Wilder. Before the show wraps up with Season 5 ending, we can hope to find out why Helen broke up with Max and whether Max will get back together with Helen or Wilder, depending on whether or not there’s another one Chance for the couple to get back together. The fifth season finale will be the final episode of the show.
