Chenoweth was given the name Kristi Dawn Chenoweth by her adoptive parents, Junie Smith Chenoweth and Jerry Morris Chenoweth, when she was only five days old. Her adoptive parents were both chemical engineers and lived in a suburb of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Broken Arrow.

She has stated that she is of one-quarter Cherokee descent and that she eventually met her birth mother. She also stated that she was adopted at birth.

She started singing gospel music at a young age and performing for local churches.
