First half of life
Thomas John Digweed was born in 1967 in Hastings, an English seaside town in East Sussex.
Digweed, who started DJing at age 15 and later gained fame for his raves at Hastings Pier, attributes his ability to be creative to growing up here.
But the young British DJ’s big break came when he sent a recording of his mixtape to Renaissance nightclub owner Geoff Oakes, who played it for Alexander Coe, better known as DJ Sasha, who became the DJ’s instant friend.
working life
John Digweed gained notoriety during his collaboration with Sasha for championing progressive house music and creating Renaissance: The Mix Collection, the first nightclub-targeted compilation.
A compilation CD was not commercially distributed until this Renaissance CD, as they had previously only been made by amateurs.
After that, Digweed and Sasha released Northern Exposure, which is often cited as one of the most important albums in the history of electronic music.
With his friend Nick Muir, John Digweed founded the record company Bedrock Records to further promote his music. The two co-wrote the song “For What You Dream Of”, which was featured in the highly regarded film Trainspotting.
Between 2000 and 2005, Digweed split his time between performing at The Beach in Brighton and the small nightclub Heaven in London.
A six-week US tour by John Digweed, Sasha and Belgian DJ Jimmy Van Vee was marketed by Clear Channel in 2002.
John Digweed was also doing a weekly two-hour radio show on Kiss 100 in the UK at the time, where he played music for the first hour and then let a guest DJ take over for the second.
On Kiss 100 from 2000 to 2011, this hosting position lasted before transitioning into an internet show that celebrated its 800th episode in 2019 and is still going strong today.
