Tom Brady and Gisele Bündchen were “smart” to delay filing for divorce as it kept them private, says only the Page Six attorney.
The former couple filed papers in a Florida court earlier this week and confirmed in separate statements that their marriage had reached the end zone on Friday.
“They often settle in behind closed doors before they let anyone in,” explains divorce attorney Jacqueline Newman, who did not work with the famous Victoria’s Secret quarterback angel.
“I think it’s very common. It’s a smarter way of doing things. “
As Bündchen, 42, and Brady, 45, filed in Florida, the divorce papers would be available to the public. Newman, who practices in New York, where the papers remain private, also explained that a public divorce could affect a celebrity’s image.
“Not only are you negotiating care and finances, you also have to be very careful if your public image is very valuable,” he says. “It’s just wiser to leave nothing until you’re done and the ink is dry.”
The Brazilian model and Tampa Bay Buccaneers player have been married for 13 years. They share two biological children: 12-year-old Benjamin and 9-year-old Vivian. Brady also has a 15-year-old son, Jack, from a previous relationship with ex-girlfriend Bridget Moynahan.
According to court documents obtained by Page Six, the former duo passed the required “family stabilization” course prior to divorce, as their marriage was “irretrievably severed.” Brady completed the 4-hour course on October 25, and his former supermodel graduated on October 26.
The documents also showed that they agreed to a marriage settlement, which will remain confidential.
Bündchen wrote in her Instagram Story: “We broke up and although it is obviously difficult to go through something like this, I feel blessed for the time we spent together and I always wish Tom the best.”
Brady added in his own Instagram statement that he and his ex-wife had made a “painful and difficult” decision “after much thought.”
“We only wish ourselves the best as we continue with new chapters in our lives that have yet to be written,” he concluded.
