Kelly Rowland tells the AMA crowd to “chill loose” after Chris Brown wins
Kelly Rowland has silenced public unrest after Chris Brown’s American Music Award was booed on Sunday.
A former member of Destiny’s Child announced that Brown was winner of the Favorite R&B Artist categorynoting that the 33-year-old was not there to receive the trophy – but would accept it on his behalf.
“I’m sorry,” Rowland, 41, said amid boos from the crowd. “Relax.”
The lead singer of “Dilemma” called Brown an “amazing performer” and spoke directly to him.
“Chris, thank you so much for making great R&B music,” the actress concluded. “I will take this award [and] bring it to you. I love you. Congratulations and congratulations to all nominees in this category.”
Social media users had mixed feelings about Rowland’s defense of Brown, who has been repeatedly accused of violence against women.
“Why did Kelly Rowland fight so hard for Chris Brown on this stage?” one spectator he asked via TwitterWith another inscription“What the hell is Chris Brown doing, still winning awards and why Kelly Rowland really thanks him for his ass.”
The third one though shared their gratitudeadding, “Thank you Kelly Rowland for the sincere love you just showed Chris Brown for the win.”
The dancer claimed on Saturday that he did was to pay tribute to Michael Jackson at the 50th Annual Awards.
“YOU ARE SERIOUS?” Brown told his Instagram followers over the weekend, sharing footage of what appeared to be a rehearsal. “I WOULD have been an ama show but they canceled me for unknown reasons.”
The show’s producers have yet to comment on the show’s seemingly abrupt cancellation.
Since then, the songwriter has come under fire many times assault on Rihanna in 2009from being accused of hitting a woman in 2021 – an investigation that was later dropped due to “insufficient evidence” – to a lawsuit for allegedly drugging and raping a woman in 2020.
Brown denied both allegations against him, posting on Instagram during the 2020 impeachment: “Every time I release music or projects, ‘They’ try to pull some real bulls.”
Brown also made headlines over alleged altercations with his ex-girlfriend Karreuche Tran, who appeared as a presenter on the Sunday show.
The recurring couple dated from 2010 to 2015, with Tran claiming in 2017 that Brown punched her in the stomach and pushed her down the stairs.
The actress subsequently obtained a five-year restraining order against her ex.
Brown denied her allegations at the time and said she “didn’t need a restraining order” and accused her of trying to “promote something”.
