‘Fame’ and ‘Flashdance’ singer Irene Cara dies aged 63

“Flashdance” singer Irene Cara has died, her publicist Judith Moose, announced on the website of the deceased performer on Saturday. She was 63 years old.
“It is with deep sadness that I announce the passing of Irene Cara on behalf of her family,” the statement read.
“The Oscar-winning actress, singer, songwriter and producer has died at her home in Florida. Her cause of death is currently unknown and will be revealed as information becomes available.”
The statement continued: “Irene’s family has requested privacy as they process their bereavement.
“She was a beautifully talented soul whose legacy will live on forever through her music and films. The funeral ceremony is underway and a memorial for her fans will be planned in the future.”
Moose then tweeted that breaking news of her client’s death is “the absolute worst part of being a publicist.”
“I can’t believe I had to write this, let alone release a new one,” she added. “Please share your thoughts and memories of Irene. I will read each of them and I know she will be smiling from Heaven. She loved her fans. – J.M.
Cara was born in the Bronx and began performing as a child, appearing on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and a regular on The Electric Company.
She is best known for her role as Coco Hernandez in the 1980 film Fame, as well as her singing of the title track and other hits from the film, such as “Hot Lunch Jam” and “Out Here On My Own”, which earned her two Grammy Awards.
In 1984, Cara won an Oscar for the song “Flashdance… What a Feeling” from the movie “Flashdance” starring Jennifer Beals and Michael Nouri. She co-wrote the monster hit – which also won a Grammy Award – and sang it.
Her other film roles include Sparkle Williams in the original 1976 musical drama Sparkle and Ginny Lee in City Heat with Clint Eastwood.
