A new, unabashed rom-com set in high school

The final season of Never Have I Ever is pretty far from anything new in terms of story and plot. However, the show’s characters and technicalities appear fresh in comparison.

Although many elements of the new season were missing, such as Despite having more mature character arcs and a focus on the characters’ sex lives, the previous two seasons were still fresh from a narrative perspective.

The ten-episode season premiered on Netflix on August 12, 2022, continuing the highly anticipated story of Maitreyi Ramakrishnan’s Devi Vishwakumar after she found her “true love.”

The new season is different and more experienced, much like the characters of the series. The conflicts have changed and Devi has evolved into a much more whole person.

It’s admirable how Never Have I Ever has gradually evolved into a more mature version of itself, with the focus gradually shifting from a girl harmed by the death of her father to a girl trying to find her place in the midst of the found many difficulties in today’s society, including getting her name on the list of cupids.

Even if the story of Devi and her late father had been real, the show wouldn’t have worked without advances, and the next season’s storyline benefited greatly from this apparent improvement. No one knew that Mindy Kaling and Lang Fisher’s online series would rank among the best comedies of the current generation. The series won over viewers over time.

It’s very similar to the third season. At first glance, it may not seem like the ideal sequel or significant improvement, but as the writers and characters mature, viewers will quickly see how different season two is.

The popularity of Devi’s relationship with Paxton Hall-Yoshida, portrayed by Darren Barnet, and the reactions of others provide the highlight of the season (negatives for dating the hottest guy).

However, the story changes quickly as new characters are introduced, Devi jumps around, and romance abounds throughout. This season’s focus is on the depiction of romance. While it would be wrong to say that the show has paid enough attention to each character’s story, everything it has achieved can be seen as a genuine effort.

Another plus for this season was that it never felt uninteresting or unoriginal. The beginning is explosive, the middle is dense and the ending is beautiful. With three fantastic seasons covering everything from grief to losing one’s innocence, it would be fair to say that Never Have I Ever has now officially established itself as one of the most relatable series on the internet.

This season’s less culturally oriented approach might not be to everyone’s taste, but that doesn’t necessarily make it terrible. A show is distinctive when it’s culture-driven. But it also prevents characters who are people of color from being seen as unique; Instead, they become stereotypical representations of the community.

Of course, a character’s cultural identity cannot be separated from this. In addition, the culture of Devi and her family has already been fully portrayed in the first two seasons. Maybe this moment is a good opportunity to see Devi as just another high school student struggling with boys.

Everything else about Never Have I Ever, including a strong script, expert camerawork and soundscape to match, left me quite impressed. For example, the sixth episode’s exploration of Ben’s life had excellent cinematography. Such situations shaped the whole program, especially in the second half.

The script for the slowly developing friendship between Paxton and Ben was excellent. The hospital scene also had a strong cinematic quality and fantastic background music enhanced the action.

In numerous moments throughout the sixth and seventh episodes, the camera helped highlight Ben’s envy of Des. Devi’s revelation and the conclusion were both expertly portrayed. In addition, the pacing was excellent, keeping the show captivating at every turn. It makes for a wonderful weekend and is well worth seeing.
