In 2009, Herbert drove a Honda Civic for Team Dynamics in the eighth round of the British Touring Car Championship, held at Silverstone. This was his first time in the championship. He was 17th in qualifying for the first race and 13th when it was over. In the second race he finished eighth, which was enough for three points. For the last race of the day, the starting grid will be backwards. Six, seven, eight, nine or ten of the first cars to finish the second race start the third race in the order in which they finished the second race. The winner of the second race chooses a number between 6 and 10 from a hat. At the last race of the day, the top nine swapped places, allowing Herbert to go from second to first place. 2005

In 2005 Herbert was hired as Sporting Relations Manager at the Jordan Grand Prix. For the 2006 World Championship the team changed its name to Midland F1. But Spyker Cars bought the team in September this year and changed its name to Spyker MF1. Herbert’s contract was not renewed, which was another decision by the new owners.

2004

In 2004, Herbert and Jamie Davies won the Le Mans Series championship in an Audi R8. Along the way they won races at Monza and Spa.

2001

In 2001 he was hired by Arrows F1 Team owner Tom Walkinshaw as the team’s test and development driver.

1999

Herbert’s helmet was red with a white line running through the sides from behind and on the mouthplate. It also had black stripes on the lower sides and a black stripe on the back, like Depailler’s helmet. When he rode for Stewart in 1999, the stripes on the lower sides were changed to green and a Union Jack drop was added to the top of the helmet. When he drove for Jaguar in 2000, the green patches turned blue.

1996

After Benetton dropped him, Herbert drove for the Swiss team Sauber from 1996 to 1998. He was on the podium twice, once in the 1996 Monaco Grand Prix, which was his only point that year, and again in the 1997 Hungarian Grand Prix. That was the only year of Herbert’s three at Sauber that he scored more than once. He has also finished fourth twice (in Argentina and Belgium), fifth twice (in Spain and Canada) and sixth once (in Japan).

When he moved to the Stewart Grand Prix in 1999, his younger teammate Rubens Barrichello consistently beat him in qualifying. However, he won his third and last Grand Prix race at the rainy European Grand Prix. Herbert stayed with Stewart after Ford bought the team and changed it to Jaguar. He had another frustrating and pointless season which ended with him being carried off the track in Malaysia after suspension failure led to a serious crash.

1994

After three years of dissatisfaction with Lotus, Herbert left the team in mid-1994 and worked for Ligier and then Benetton for the last few races of the season. Although he didn’t score in 1994, Michael Schumacher kept him on his team in 1995. After Damon Hill and Michael Schumacher fell at the British Grand Prix, he took the win. He did a similar thing at Monza, where he finished fourth in the championship.

In 1991 he also co-drived a Mazda 787B in two rounds of the Fuji Long Distance Sports Car Series. Both times they finished fourth. At the July race, he stopped his car to help a passenger who had a flat tire while driving very fast. This earned him the Sportsman Award at the 1991 Autosport Awards.

1989

Despite being unable to move, Herbert got back into Formula 1 in early 1989. 1985

In 1985 Herbert won the Formula Ford Festival at Brands Hatch. This caught the attention of Eddie Jordan and the two won the 1987 British Formula 3 title together. Herbert was an International Formula 3000 championship contender in 1988 when he was hit from behind by Gregor Foitek at Brands Hatch. This resulted in Herbert falling into the wall cockpit first, injuring his ankles and feet after hitting the barriers multiple times. The threat of amputation was there, but it went away after Herbert had multiple surgeries and months of physical therapy. However, the extent of his injuries would always make it difficult for him to move. He would never be able to walk again and he would have to change his driving style.
