In 2004, the couple finally broke up and separated from each other. Rushdie was married to American novelist Marianne Wiggins before her marriage to West. After marrying in 1988, the couple moved to London, where they remained while Rushdie fought the fatwa issued against him by Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Khomeini for his book The Satanic Verses.
