Anne Hathaway Claps to ‘Tonight Show’ Audience After Awkward Interview on ‘The Idea of You’
Anne Hathaway thanked “Tonight Show” viewers on social media after learning that no one in the audience had read the novel on which her latest film “The Idea of You” is based.
The actress took to her Instagram Story on Sunday to boast that the Robinne Lee romance novel has become a bestseller after an awkward conversation with host Jimmy Fallon last week.
“The audience said, ‘Hold my book!'” she wrote, tagging Fallon in her post.
Hathaway’s post comes after she was met with silence after asking viewers if they had read Lee’s novel during an April 29 appearance on the comedian’s show.

“Has anyone here read this book?” – she asked.
When the room fell silent for a few seconds, Fallon interjected, “No, we don’t read. This is “The Tonight Show.” If you want people to read books, you want to turn to Stephen Colbert. Bad!”
“We do Audible here,” he joked.
The 41-year-old “Les Misérables” star appeared embarrassed by the audience’s lack of reaction as she covered her face with her hands.
She quickly composed herself, playing Fallon’s joke and adding, “What’s a book?”
At the time, Hathaway was applauded for her grace as she handled the situation “like a pro.”
“It’s honestly so funny I can’t stop thinking about it. “Anne is fighting for her life up there,” wrote one person on X.
“Her real shock at that moment [was] very good,” added another.
Last month, the “The Dark Knight Rises” star went on a press tour to promote “The Idea of You,” which had its world premiere on May 2. The film, which also stars Nicholas Galitzine as Hathaway’s on-screen love interest, is available to stream on Amazon Best Videos.
Hathaway opened up about her personal life and career, revealing that she had been sober for five years interview for the New York Times..
The actress also recalled that in the early 2000s, she dated 10 different guys for chemistry tests.
