Hollie Dance: Archie Battersbee’s mother battled “till the last end” to save her son
Hollie Dance thought that her son Archie Battersbee was taking part in a dangerous online challenge that went viral on TikTok.
Archie Battersbee, a 12-year-old boy, died recently, and people were shocked by how the authorities handled the situation. Hollie Dance promised to “fight until the bitter end” before her son died. Sky News says that after she lost her last legal case to keep her son on life support, the mother gripped her coffee cup tight and said she would keep fighting even in the morning. She told me, “I’m not the type to just sit and cry. I’ve never stopped moving. Do you know that I drive my kids 40,000 miles a year?” The reporter said that the mother is often seen wearing shoes made for running. Hollie is a single mom and used to be a dancer. She worked seven days a week to feed and take care of her kids. “I had to pay their dad to watch over them. I did everything I could to help them with their passions, like Archie’s mixed martial arts, Lauren’s love of horses, and Tom’s boxing “she said.
The Barts Health NHS Trust said that Archie’s brain stem was dead, and they asked the court to let them do a test to prove it. The Trust was against the child’s family, and they wanted Battersbee to stop getting care right away. Hollie said, “It’s not time yet. Why won’t they let him try? People get longer for broken bones.” But in the end, the court didn’t listen to the mother’s pleas and told all of the treatments that were being given to the child to stop.
The mother also talked about what happened and how it was so sad. Hollie thinks that her son took part in a dangerous TikTok challenge that went viral. He hurt himself trying the trick, and they found him at their home in Southend-on-Sea with a rope around his neck. His mother ran for help right away, cut him down, and put her mouth to his. She told me, “I don’t remember what happened. But the other day I briefly left the hospital. It was the first time I wasn’t there or in court, and I started having memories of what happened. I felt sick.”
Even though doctors said Archie’s brain was getting worse. But his mother still had to go to court several times. She talked about how hard each one was, but the second High Court battle was the hardest. The doctors said that Archie is “most likely dead” because there was no brain stem test during the hearing. Her other kids who went to the session had to listen to the doctors say over and over that Archie was dead. It was a hard time for the whole family. Hollie was losing almost everything that was going on. Her only win was when her lawyers were able to show that the criminal standard of proof should be used when deciding if someone is dead.
