Attorney – She-Hulk: Episode 5 Recap & Review
The first part of She-Hulk Episode 5 is a synopsis of how she fished this guy and made it look like it was his fault. Jen finds out that Titania is suing her for using the name “She-Hulk” after breaking with the “hot doctor cliché”. Now, Titania is selling a new line of expensive skincare, beauty, and wellness products under that name. It’s also everywhere since their brand sponsors podcasts and it’s been in the news.
Jen comes to Titania and tells her to put everything away. And of course she doesn’t. Jennifer contemplates taking her to court while trying to figure out what to do.
Nikki seeks out a man named Alonzo who works as a drip broker. She goes to a Boba coffee shop, where Nikki is talking to a worker in Chinese. Despite not being Chinese, he takes the two to the back room and shows them fake Avengers stuff.
Jen talks about what’s going on with the She-Hulk brand while Nikki arranges a meeting with Alonzo to help her with her clothes. Her boss is quick to point out that this is an issue that needs to be addressed quickly. Jen says she never considered trademarking the “She-Hulk” name (I mean, she hated it at first, didn’t she? (Why not just choose a different name?)
Jen is told that she must file a counterclaim and prove that she used the “She-Hulk” name professionally prior to the trademark date and that Titania is making money off the name fame. She is also told to clean up and that she needs new clothes.
Titania’s attorney makes some really good arguments in court, such as Jen’s interest in the She-Hulk name only becoming an issue once Titania started making money from it. They even have a video of her saying, “I won’t answer that because that’s not my name.” Jen’s attorney shows another video of her saying that this is her real name and that she is proud of it.
They take a break until Thursday, when the judge tells Jen that she needs to show more often if she’s settled on that name. She went on some dates as She-Hulk instead of her real name, Jen Walters when using the Catfish dating profile. Jennifer is horrified to find that she has to bring all the men she’s dated into the courtroom to prove her point.
The hot doctor is back and says Jen isn’t his type so he would never date her. The judge agrees that Jennifer can continue to use the name “She-Hulk” while Titania must stop doing business under that name. Jen is shown as a victim, and her attorney tells her she “can do better. They deserve better.”
The two go out for a drink and talk about how bad men are. Jen goes back to see Alonzo and ends up getting her suit. We don’t actually see it, but at the end of the episode we do get a glimpse of the new daredevil mask. It seems that Matt Murdoch is also one of Alonzo’s clients.
recap of the episode
Aside from Jens catfishing in the last episode, which showed how morals can be twisted, She Hulk Episode 5 is just…boring. The legal drama is poorly written because I don’t think character witnesses would be enough to stop legal filings already filed that would need approval anyway. I’m not a lawyer so can’t say for sure but it seems pretty simple doesn’t it?
Again, there’s no comedy here, except for a joke about Shrek making fun of how bad CGI can look at times, and Jen’s character doesn’t change at all. Jen gets a glimmer of hope in court when she finds out the doctor doesn’t want to date her because she’s not his type… before that’s quickly dismissed and Jen is herself again.
This show has been going downhill for a while, and it’s safe to say that most people are still watching to see what the writers are doing with Daredevil. Given what they did with “Wongers” and “Abomination,” I don’t have much hope that they do justice to his character.
We’re hoping next week’s episode gets better, but so far this run has been pretty poor.
Episode 4:
Jennifer Walters/She-Hulk (Tatiana Maslany) was hired by Wong (Benedict Wong) in Episode 4 of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law to negotiate with Donny Blaze, a former student of the Mystic Arts (Rhys Coiro). . However, Walters lost the case because there was no law that said someone couldn’t practice magic, real or fake. However, Donny’s victory turned out to be defeat because he accidentally opened a portal to a dimension with small demon monsters. So Donny Wong had to ask for help to figure out what to do. And because there were too many monsters, Wong had to end Jennifer’s date with Arthur (Michel Curiel) and get her to fight her. Once that was done, Wong immediately returned them to Arthur. The next day, however, Titania (Jameela Jamil) sued Jennifer for calling herself She-Hulk, even though that name was already trademarked.
Nikki and Pug get an appointment with superhero costumer Alonzo
At the beginning of Episode 5, “Mean, Green, and Straight Poured into These Jeans,” Jennifer notes that Titania does a lot of publicity to ensure that the name “She-Hulk” is associated only with her. Cousin Ched (Nicholas Cirillo) even buys some Titania stuff, believing it has something to do with Jennifer, and brings it to her house to have it autographed. You know, so he can sell them and make some money. But Jennifer tells him that they don’t belong to her, they belong to Titania. Ched reminds her that she should have protected her own superhero name from Titania like she hadn’t thought of it a hundred times. At this point, the title card changes from “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law” to “She-Hulk by Titania,” which is the only joke that’s always funny.
Jennifer and Nikki (Ginger Gonzaga) decide to warn Titania by going to her fan convention and telling her to stop selling counterfeit She-Hulk branded products. Titania clearly says no. So Jennifer tries to convince herself that she never wanted to be called She-Hulk. So she doesn’t mind if other people use that name. But the way she stomps angrily on her folder shows that she’s upset about the whole thing with her name. Nikki and Augustus ‘Pug’ Pugliese (Josh Segarra) head to a Boba coffee shop that turns out to be a cover for Alonzo’s (Griffin Matthews) superhero costume shop while Jennifer deals with her anger issues. But the guy at the front desk won’t let her in just like that. Nikki and Pug can’t talk to Alonzo until they buy some fake Avengers stuff. When Nikki says She-Hulk is an Avenger, Alonzo agrees to a 15 minute meeting.
Jennifer has an idea to win her case against Titania
Holden Holliway (Steve Coulter) tells Jennifer that she needs to get the name “She-Hulk” back from Titania because that name is associated with GLK and H’s superhero division. Jennifer’s attorney is Mallory Book, played by Renée Elise Goldsberry. Book’s first question to Walters is the same question everyone else has asked: Why didn’t she protect her own pen name? Walters says Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange or Chris Hemsworth’s Thor never had to do that. So it makes sense that she didn’t think about it. Book tells her that those aren’t their names as superheroes. Those are their real names. She says they will sue Titania, saying Jennifer used the name “She-Hulk” professionally prior to the trademark date. And Titania only makes money from how popular this name is in the market. She also tells Jennifer that she should dress better to show that she respects herself.
Mallory says all of these things on day one of the hearing to show why Jennifer deserves to be called “She-Hulk.” Titania’s attorney says Jennifer has publicly said she doesn’t want to be associated with that name. Mallory responds by showing the clip where Jennifer says it doesn’t matter if she likes her superhero name or not because she has to live with it. The judge asks Mallory to show that Jennifer’s name has always been associated with “She-Hulk”. If she fails, she must side with Titania. When Jennifer and Nikki return to their office after a brief meeting with Alonzo about their superhero suits, they find out that Todd (Jon Bass), the guy from one of Jennifer’s dates, is one of their biggest clients. Though he seems as creepy as ever, it gives Jennifer the idea to use her dates as witnesses because she dated them as She-Hulk.
