Bethenny Frankel slams ‘misleading’ filters in body image message

Bethenny Frankel has been using photoshop forever.

The The Real Housewives of New York The alum shared two versions of the same photo on Instagram, both showing her standing on the beach in a bikini. The former is flawless compared to the latter, but that’s only because Bethenny admitted to editing it to show social media’s ability to distort our perception of reality.

“I look WRONG… and you know I’m not vain and I’ll show you the real me,” she wrote on Aug. 31. “But if I posted a version of it every day, you might start to believe that it could be. That’s how distorted it all is.”

“Filtering is a lie: it’s deceptive,” Bethenny continued. “It makes women feel bad. This makes young girls insecure and obsessed with unattainable perfection. This makes middle-aged women and mothers feel insecure. It creates a false ideal for men.”

The Skinnygirl founder added that over-editing photos is not only “the opposite of inspiring” but also “destructive” and “irresponsible.”

“There is a line between trying to look beautiful,” she concluded the post, “and outright lying.”
