The affairs of Mahimananda Mishra
BHUBANESWAR: Police are investigating whether it is possible to legally seize the property of business magnate Mahimananda Mishra on the grounds that he has illegally amassed huge wealth. Mishra was arrested from Bangkok on December 25 last year for allegedly masterminding the murder of Seaways Shipping executive Mahendra Swain on Paradeep on October 26. To date, Paradeep police in Jagatsinghpur district have brought to light at least 13 criminal cases against Mishra. Mishra was arrested for this alleged crime after being taken into custody on December 25 last year.
It is rumored that Mishra, the owner of Orissa Stevedores Limited (OSL), owns assets worth over Rs 10,000 crore. “We have already blocked his bank accounts, which contain deposits totaling more than 5 crore rupees. We are investigating the matter with legal counsel to determine whether or not we may seize all of his property and other bank accounts. We have a very strong suspicion that he obtained most of his wealth unethically. Although he was involved in a number of companies, stevedore work was his main job. He secured multiple contracts for handling cargo by force. According to a senior police officer who spoke to TOI, “It was clear from Swain’s murder when Seaways Shipping emerged as a major threat to his business and monopoly.”
Mahima Mishra’s Charges
The police have put together a compelling diary against Mishra, who had a significant amount of influence in the police and power corridor, and they recently presented it in the district and trial court. Although he was charged with participating in criminal activities as early as 1995, Mishra has never been arrested or convicted of any crime. Despite being detained in May 1998 in connection with the death of union leader Bichitrananda Mallick, he was eventually released on bail.
“We explained to the court how he built his business empire and how he succeeded despite being involved in a large number of lawsuits. We are keeping our fingers crossed that the judge would refuse him bail,” the officer said.
Police said on the file of the case that Mishra made a suspicious withdrawal of about Rs 80 lakh in cash from his regular accounts between August and September last year. The police officer stated, “We have a strong suspicion that he was in possession of the huge sum of money to materialize Swain’s murder.”
At the same time, the local police station is expected to seek custody of Mishra for questioning in connection with a case brought against him in February 2016. Based on a complaint from Mishra’s rival businessman Pranakrushna Nayak, the Mancheswar Police had registered the case against him, as well as his associate Basant Bal and Congress leader Arindam Sarkhel, also known as Bapi. Nayak claimed that the three of them dropped bombs on his house on February 26, 2016. The complaint led to the registration of the case against all three. Both Bal and Sarkhel have been arrested in connection with the investigation into Swain’s death. While Sarkhel is still being held in court, Bal receives medical care at SCB’s medical facility in Cuttack while in police custody.
According to Nalinikanta Moharana, the court’s public prosecutor, Mahima Mishra filed a new bail request with the Jagatsinghpur district and hearing judge on Friday. Mahima and Basant Bal, the director of OSL, had petitioned the Orissa Supreme Court for provisional bail before they were taken into custody.
Nevertheless, the Supreme Court decided not to offer them temporary protection.
Other accused parties in this case, Rakesh Chaubey of Jharkhand and congressional politician Bapi Sarkhel, were previously dismissed by Jagatsinghpur district and hearing court, Mihar Parida.
