Brandon Emil Phillips was born on June 28, 1981 in Raleigh, North Carolina. Phillips grew up in an athletic family. His father, James Phillips, owns a baseball complex in Georgia.

Beginning of career

Phillips was a basketball and baseball player at Redan High School in Stone Mountain, Georgia. Redan High School retired its #7 jersey in December 2003. In high school he was an amazing athlete, earning a reputation for his prowess in the state and country.

Phillips’ favorite baseball player as a child was Cincinnati Reds shortstop Barry Larkin. Phillips was drafted as a shortstop by the Montreal Expos in the second round of the 1999 MLB draft after signing a letter of intent to play baseball and football at the University of Georgia.
