Brokeback Mountain (2005) ending explained: why did Jack and Ennis break up?
Many people consider Brokeback Mountain a groundbreaking film, but reviews were mixed at the time. It caused a lot of trouble because it showed homosexuality and questioned morality, religion and societal values.
This wacky, creatively complex film became popular because it showed a different side to the homophobic rants about how “unnatural” it was to be gay at the time. It was replaced by the unnaturalness of suppressing sexuality.
The American neo-Western romance drama Brokeback Mountain is directed by Ang Lee, who won an Academy Award for his work as a director, producer and screenwriter.
The film stars Heath Ledger, Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway. It’s about two cowboys in the American West, Ennis Del Mar and Jack Twist, and their complicated 20-year love story.
The two people become close, but cultural norms end up tearing their relationship apart. Everyone feels bad for her. This kind of “forbidden” love could exist between two women or between two people of different religions or cultures, making the film even more accessible to the audience.
Where did the idea for Brokeback Mountain come from?
The film “Brokeback Mountain” is based on a short story of the same name. The story is very sad. Annie Proulx wrote this story, which was reprinted in the 1997 New Yorker.
Anne Proulx tells of a time when she lived in northern Wyoming and saw that many people there were anti-gay in an interview. One night while she was in a bar, she saw an old cowboy leaning against a wall. He looked at the boys playing pool with an oddly sad and longing expression on his face.
The author wondered if he was gay and thought about what it would be like for an old cowboy to live in a place where being gay is looked down on.
In another interview, Proulx said, “The novel wasn’t ‘inspired’. Instead, it was the result of years of unconscious observation and reasoning that led to the point where I was able to write it.”
Proulx went on to talk about how remote parts of North America and the local cultures influence her art, and how she “pays attention to the historical bias between what people hoped for and who they thought they were and what happened to them.” “.
How does the film show how the book was written?
In Brokeback Mountain, Proulx consistently pits nature against culture. The characters’ strong feelings for each other are like nature in that they cannot be stopped, and the scenery shown as their love grows gives the setting a symbolic meaning.
Brokeback Mountain’s scenery explores the themes of desire and denial in a different way than is typically done in a western.
Throughout the film, Jack Twist and Ennis Del Mar have a hard time putting into words how they feel about each other. Even when they do, they feel constrained by society and culture and can’t say what they really want to say.
The setting of the story is crucial to how it is told. This is an important part of telling the Brokeback Mountain story when dialogue alone isn’t enough.
The film is set in Rocky Mountain West. The mountains provide a dramatic contrast to the two characters’ different hometowns. They both come from places that are empty, both physically and emotionally, and Brokeback Mountain shows them a way out.
As society expects, Jack moves to Texas to live with his wealthy bride. Ennis, on the other hand, is bound by money and responsibility.
From the beautiful view from the top of the mountain to the boring everyday life that society expects of them, they go through a lot. In the film, the mountains are alive, wild, and untamed, while their hometowns are dull, tame, sad, and lonely. The mountain also serves as a tombstone for the men’s relationship, which must now end.
Why is Jack breaking up with Ennis?
Ennis and Jack would sometimes see each other when they were both out fishing. But eventually they decide they’re just too different to be together. The decision was made based on what Ennis’ father did to a gay person when he caught her in the act.
That memory was a big part of what scared his son. Unfortunately, after falling out and reconciling, the two go their separate ways.
How does Ennis find out that Jack has died?
A few years later, Ennis sent Jack a postcard that was returned to him with the word “Deceased.” He wastes no time and immediately calls Jack’s partner Lureen. Through Lureen, he finds out that Jack died in a car accident in which a tire blew up in his face.
Ennis can’t help but think about a death resulting from his worst fear. He believes Jack may have been killed in an act of violence. Lureen also tells Jack that her husband wanted his ashes scattered all over Brokeback Mountain.
Ennis takes a trip to do what Jack wants and talk to his parents. However, his father says he would rather have the ashes scattered around the family home.
How does Jack actually die?
Although Lureen’s claims appear to be true, it’s possible that there is another explanation. There are hints in the film about how Jack could have been injured and died. In an earlier scene, Jack can be seen moving on a guy in the bar. A couple of angry men look up at Jack as the cowboy turns to speak to his friend in the corner. You can see how quickly things could have gone wrong for him and killed him.
Jack often tried to get what he wanted by hanging out with men, so it’s likely he was killed in the process. Also, the movie doesn’t do anything to make Ennis feel any better. So it is possible that this situation really happened.
In an interview, Anne Hathaway said she didn’t know what happened to Jack. She goes on to say that the scene in the film where Lureen calls Ennis was shot twice. Lureen is seen telling Ennis how she found out her partner was gay and that he was killed because of his sexuality. The other was when Lureen told Ennis that Jack had died because a tire had exploded in his face.
In the end, both takes were combined instead of using each one individually. Anne doesn’t seem to understand why Ang Lee told them that.
Does Lureen know if Jack is gay or straight?
Lureen could have figured out her partner’s sexual preferences over time, but nothing of the sort is shown on screen. She tells Ennis in the film that her partner wanted his ashes scattered all over Brokeback Mountain.
She might have thought that Jack might have lived on the mountain when he was young. In reality, however, this gives Jack and Ennis a safe place to meet.
In some parts of the film, Lureen tells other women that her partner didn’t want to “dance” with her. In this case, dancing may have been associated with close relationships. She goes on to say that she told her husband he couldn’t “drink.” She hinted that she may have asked her husband to stop having gay relationships.
Jack “drank” a lot, but, as she says, he didn’t pay attention to her. Her eyes seem to tear as she speaks, which could mean she knew Jack used to hang out with Ennis, or that she was sad about her late husband.
