Lisa Kerr: Cause of Death

On March 24, 1999, San Fernando Valley firefighters extinguished a fire caused by a burning 1994 Ford Probe parked along the Northbound Hollywood Freeway at the Roscoe Boulevard exit ramp. They discovered someone burned inside the car, so they called the police and an arson investigator to the crime scene.

They positively identified the charred body as 32-year-old Lisa Lorraine Kerr thanks to a driver’s license they obtained from a purse discovered in the vehicle. In addition, they discovered evidence that suggested the fire was intentional, as well as traces that suggested an accelerant was used.

According to autopsy findings, the most important contributors to mortality were smoke inhalation and thermal burns. Further investigation revealed that although suffocation was a possibility, the charred remains made it impossible to determine whether or not it was a factor.

Despite this, the medical examiner concluded that Lisa was still alive when the fire started, but that she was probably unconscious because she did not try to escape the building. The results of his toxicological test showed that he also had moderate levels of carbon monoxide in his circulation, confirming the hypothesis that an accelerant was used in the incident.

Details Of Lisa Kerr’s Murder

Initially, the police were looking at Calvin Kerr, Lisa’s ex-husband, as a possible suspect in the murder. According to the findings of the investigation, Calvin had problems in a past relationship but was ultimately acquitted as a suspect. As the investigation into Lisa’s life progressed, authorities eventually came up with a name: Donald Lewis Brooks Jr., who worked as a plumber. He has not been seen or heard from since the day the crime was committed.

In October of 1997, Lisa and Donald first connected at an Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) dance. They corresponded behind each other’s backs for ten months, and it wasn’t until August 1998 that Donald told another AA member, Mark Harvey, about it.

Donald professes his love for Lisa, but is angered and disappointed when Lisa recently decides to get back together with Calvin for the sake of their child. Donald believes that his son would be better off without the parent. She did not want the affair to end, and allegedly admitted to telling others that she intended to stab Calvin or take other violent actions to “get him out of the picture.” Lisa confessed to some of her friends and acquaintances that she began to feel afraid of Donald when he began to show his true colors, which is a vindictive and jealous person. Lisa revealed to one of her friends that Donald, who was fascinated by her, was there “every time she turned around,” standing outside her house or business and watching her. Donald follows her and harasses her because of his attraction to her.

How Was the Murderer Caught?

After Lisa divorced her husband and subsequently moved into her own apartment in January 1999, she continued, despite her misgivings, to accept financial support from Donald. After naming himself and Lisa as tenants in the lease agreement that Donald signed, he gave the document to Lisa to sign. Many of Lisa’s friends and acquaintances say she only let Donald into her life “for the money.” After questioning Mark, investigators discovered that Donald allegedly threatened to harm Mark and his children if Mark allowed Lisa to rent a room in his house. This information was obtained during Mark’s interview with the investigators.

After reviewing Donald’s cellphone records, investigators discovered that he made a call from the crime scene at approximately 4:23 a.m. on March 24, 1999. This was minutes before firefighters arrived at the scene.

Additionally, the locations of his cell towers revealed that he made two calls from the neighborhood of Lisa’s house that particular night. Police traced his location to Colorado, where he was living under an alias. He even admitted to one of his roommates, David Jayne, that he killed his ex-boyfriend by strangling her. This led the police to his location. After another four months, in July 1999, he was taken into custody.

After being extradited to California 5 days later, he confessed to his former plumbing assistant that he heard Lisa and Harvey laughing at him on March 23, 1998. This occurred after he was transported to California. Donald, filled with resentment, “couldn’t take it” and met Lisa as she was leaving the house. He then strangled the woman and placed her lifeless body in the trunk of his car. After that, he drove to the crime scene, set the car on fire, and then fled to Colorado.

Current Location Of Donald Brooks

In June of 2001, Donald was tried for the crimes of first-degree murder, stalking, and arson causing serious bodily injury, and was found guilty on all three counts. The defense that attempted to convict him of voluntary homicide committed in the heat of passion was unsuccessfully presented to the jury, resulting in the dismissal of the case.

A “special case of murder during the execution of a kidnapping and murder with execution of torture” was also brought by them.

Donald was given the death penalty, and in March of 2017, he tried to file an appeal against the decision; however, the California Supreme Court ruled in favor of upholding the decision. Official court documents indicate that the 57-year-old inmate is currently being held in a cell on death row at San Quentin State Prison located in the state of California.
