Colorful celebrity Jose Castelo Branco, 61, accused of attacking his 95-year-old wife, diamond heiress Betty Grafstein, in Portugal

José Castelo Branco – a veteran of the fashion scene and one half of perhaps society’s oddest couple – was thrown into a cell in the Iberian country earlier this month after being accused of assaulting his 95-year-old wife, the Diamond heiress Betty Grafstein.

Castelo Branco (61) says this is nonsense.

One of the reasons the couple has been raising eyebrows at galas for years is the fact that they share a wardrobe.

Castelo Branco — whose 2008 album “Oui, C’est Moi” brought him moderate success in Portugal and has appeared on various “Big Brother”-style shows there — identifies as male but is often assumed to be female because of his clothing and makeup.

Another reason is that he is 34 years younger than her.

Last year, Castelo Branco told the US Sun that strangers told him: “I live on her money. I can’t wait for him to die. I experience the most real abuse.” Grafstein added that he was taking advantage of her: “Oh [they’re] terrifying.”

In the 1960s, Grafstein was married to Albert Grafstein, who ran Grafstein Diamond Corp. with his brother.

The couple bought a house in Portugal, where Betty met Castelo Branco after Albert’s death.

Castelo Branco – often associated with Factory and Club Kid dramatis personae such as Amanda Lepore and Susanne Bartsch – and Betty married in 1996.

Grafstein was admitted to hospital in the picturesque town of Cascais last month with “various medical conditions,” according to a resident of Portugal.

It is believed that Grafstein “asked hospital staff to ‘save her’ from mistreatment by her husband” and was arrested on May 7.

The website added that Castelo Branco had been released but was “forbidden from visiting his wife.”

Despite this, he “posted numerous clips on social media asking thousands of his followers to ‘pray for her.’ “

Castelo Branco has not contacted us.
