Unfortunately, in the case of Michelle Saum Schofield, more than three decades after her death on February 24, 1987, there are still many unanswered questions. But for the past five or six years, the main question has been whether her husband, Leo Schofield, actually killed her, or whether he is in prison because of someone else’s activities, as detailed in 20/20: Last Seen In Lakeland. For now, though, if you’re simply interested in learning more about the one person committed to always fighting for their freedom – his second wife, Crissie Carter – we’ve got the information you need.
Crissie Carter who is she?
Crissie, a former state parole officer, first met inmate Leo in 1991 while she was teaching at Hendry Correctional Institution. She was quickly drawn to his story. She noted that he would declare his innocence to everyone he met, and she was no different, as he was one of her assistants while she taught prisoners how to balance a checkbook and write resumes. The only oddity is that Crissie went home to review all available court documents herself, sparking the beginning of a personal relationship when she admitted she believed him.
Over time, they developed a close relationship, and in 1995 — after Leo was misplaced — they were happily married in the chapel at DeSoto Correctional Institution. Crissie was honest about her family’s reaction to her choice of a life partner: “My family has been supportive but not entirely happy.” I have friends who are no longer in touch with me. Her unwavering belief in Leo’s innocence and her love for him prevent her from letting it affect her, which is why she took legal action.
In fact, Crissie hired a new defense attorney for her husband in 2004, and he was quick to help her in her long-standing efforts to properly screen the previously unidentifiable fingerprints on Michelle’s car. Although the technology for this was not available in 1987, new information in December of that year confirmed a match with convicted murderer Jeremy Scott (in an unrelated 1988 affair). To his wife’s dismay, despite their constant efforts, Jeremy’s confession and recantation, as well as this allegedly critical piece of evidence, did not affect Leo’s legal case.
Where is Crissie Carter?
According to Crissie Carter Schofield, “A lot of people get interested [in Leo’s case] when they hear the tale from me… Then Leo is introduced; he is somehow different. It’s not surprising that she has remained her husband’s strongest supporter, especially given the collaboration she has built with groups like The Innocence Project in the hope that one day they will be able to clear him of all charges.
It’s important to note that Crissie is adamant that Michelle is also the target of her efforts, as she believes Michelle deserves true justice. She doesn’t just work hard for Leo or for a sense of vindication. Leo’s exit isn’t everything, she said. “Michelle’s story is told in it.” From what we can learn about Crissie’s personal situation, she appears to be a Florida resident who proudly works as a clinical social worker. Crissie is reportedly currently residing near Fort Myers.
