“Driftmark” (Season 1, Episode 7) from House of the Dragon: Recap & Review
Laena’s funeral opens the seventh episode of House of the Dragon. Everyone expresses their sadness at her death, and Targareyn and Velaryon both join in. Aegon seems bored when Daemon interrupts the conversation with a manic giggle.
Rhaenyra speaks to her son after Laena’s coffin is lowered into the water with ropes, reminding him of its location and the importance of House Velaryon. One of Daemon’s two children holds out a hand to Jace as they approach; it’s a sweet gesture. As for Daemon, he’s obviously insane and gives Rhaenyra several insightful looks.
As the evening progresses, Viserys goes to bed alone without Alicent and Corlys chides his son for getting lost in the middle of the ocean and crying. After that, he talks to his side about the history of Driftmark and who will inherit it. Corlys is reminded that “Rhaenyra’s descendants are not of your blood”. “History doesn’t remember blood, it remembers names,” he replies.
Outside, as Rhaenyra strolls along the shore alongside Daemon, Corlys’ suspicions are all but confirmed. She admits that she wasn’t happy about Laena, but she was happy about Ser Harwin. Rhaenyra laments that Daemon is leaving her, and the two kiss as the waves gently lap the shore. Rhaenyra whispers, “I want you.” The two then engage in sexual activity.

Aemond wreaks havoc on other parts of the beach. Vhagar, Laena’s orphan dragon, is seen by himself. He sneakily approaches and tries to ride it. He is nearly seared as the creature belches flames deep in its bowels and is utterly eclipsed in the presence of this majestic creature.
However, Aemond is able to tame the dragon and takes it on an extensive tour around the castle. The amount of noise this makes wakes everyone in the castle, including Baela and Rhaena. Each of them takes turns approaching Jace and when he appears they all go downstairs and start hitting Aemond.
Given that one of Daemon’s children should be the one to claim the dragon, this explosive concoction explodes in a torrent of pandemonium. Luke smashed his nose while Aemond cut out his eye. Lord Corlys also appears as Viserys orders a collective silence in the hall.
The two women at the core, Alicent and Rhaenyra, frequently cross paths like mothers in a playground. In this situation, which is different, the future of the kingdom is at stake. Aemond is tasked with identifying the source of these rumors about Rhaenyra’s bastard offspring. and after taking a good look at Alicent, he mentions Aegon. “Everyone is aware. Just watch her. Aegon answers.
Viserys has succeeded and orders everyone to stop their fighting and make amends. “That is not enough.” In reparation for the damage done, Alicent decides that taking the eye off one of Rhaenyra’s children would be fair punishment.
Alicent instructs Criston Cole to take command and carry out the king’s bidding when Viserys refuses. She grabs a sword and attacks the children as soon as he hesitates.
And now they see you for who you are, Rahenyra grabs her old pal and pulls her back. She smacks Rhaenyra’s wrist, drenching the ground in blood and snarling at how unfair it is for Rhaenyra to behave as she pleases and not do what is asked of her.
The tension finally eases when Aegon claims a fair deal has been struck. Although he lost an eye, he now has a dragon. The problem got solved.

After all this, Otto is back in his role as the Hand of the King. After the event in the hallway, he approaches Alicent and expresses his admiration for her. He goes on to say that they are playing an awkward game and that their reaction may actually have helped their cause. He assures her that Viserys will forgive her and they will triumph together. Now that they have a dragon, Viserys will definitely pardon Alicent. Otto advises her daughter to be patient.
Regarding Rhaenyra, the Maester fixed her and she is now speaking to Laenor. He acknowledges that he failed her and blames the gods for creating him that way. Rhaenyra grins and tells him that this rarely happens, calling him a noble man with a kind heart.
However, Laenor makes the decision to step up his efforts and continue to be her wife. He knows this is the best thing he can do for Rhaenyea and the kingdom when he sees the goal painted on her back. Though grateful, Rhaenyra has other thoughts.
Rhaenyra approaches Daemon and recommends that they cement their relationship properly. Like Aegon the Conqueror, she wishes to bind her blood to claim Daemon as her husband and prince consort. This would only be possible if Laenor had died.
So Ser Qarl is murdered by Daemon at his expense. They discover their last son burning in the fire as the action shifts from their argument to Lord Colys’ arrival at the hall. do they otherwise?
A clever revelation reveals a still-living, bald Laenor that Ser Qarl summoned from the estate. This kills two birds with one stone and gives Laenor some closure for having been daydreaming about the Stepstones and looking for a way out.
The final scene of the episode shows Rhaenyra and Daemon getting married while their children look on.
The Episode Recap
Daemon and Rhaenyra’s marriage is sure to stun the entire realm. Not only will this make Corlys seek revenge, but it will likely end season one with a big war. There are many moving components in this situation, and Aemond’s theft of the dragon was the first trigger.
It’s obvious that Alicent’s kids share her sentiment, and at the end of the day, Rhaenyra realizes that if she wants to make a meaningful impact on the world, she needs to back her claim.
That Laenor is actually still alive and getting what he’s always wanted – an escape – adds a nice twist to the ending. He no longer worries about carrying on his family’s legacy or fathering children, and this apparent agreement he made with Rhaenyra marks a turning point in the narrative.
Next week’s series finale was supposed to be a really dramatic event and I wouldn’t be shocked if we saw a few more deaths along the way.
