Ellen Pompeo sent an emotional message to Grey’s Anatomy fans on Thursday as she prepares for the final episodes of the hit ABC series.
“I am eternally grateful and humbled by the love and support you have all shown me, Meredith GRAY and the show for 19 seasons!” she wrote on Instagram next to the selfie. “Through it all… none of this… wouldn’t have been possible without the best fans in the world.”
Pompeo who announced her departure from the series over the course of the summer, she went on to say that the fan base that rides or dies made her experience “so fun and ICONIC”.
“I love you madly and I appreciate you reciprocating. This is not your first time on a roller coaster… you know the show must go on and I will definitely be back for a visit,” the 53-year-old teased.
Pompeo, who has been with the show since its premiere in 2005, has been met with praise and gratitude in her comments section from fans of the long-running show.
“19 amazing trailblazing seasons. We can’t wait to see what’s next for you after the transition. ❤️,” commented one person.
“Thank you” isn’t even enough, Ellen, but it’s all we’ve got. 🙏🏻🥹😘,” another fan chimed in.
While a third fan told the actress that her role on the show “saved” her life, adding: “Mer has become a character I so badly needed to look up to because she’s been through so much while growing as a person.”
While Pompeo will no longer be a cast member of the award-winning series, she has promised that she will continue to be “part of the show” in other ways.
“I’m the executive producer. I spent two decades of my career [Grey’s Anatomy] it’s my heart and soul. I’ll never really leave as long as [it’s] on air,” Deadline said in September.
While the actress has “enormous gratitude” for her time on the show, she recently defended former co-star Katherine Heigl for speaking out against the show’s somewhat problematic culture.
Heigl was Hollywood’s blacklist after she left the show in 2010 after she complained about the long hours on set – which Pompeo did the same a decade later.
“I remember Heigl said something on a talk show about the crazy hours we were working – and she was 100% right,” Pompeo said in an episode of her podcast: “Tell Me with Ellen Pompeo”, adding that “she was telling the truth. She wasn’t lying.
The “Old School” star continued: “If she said that today, she’d be a complete hero. But it’s ahead of its time. [She] made a statement about our crazy hours and, of course, let’s hit a woman and call her ungrateful.”
