Ending Explained For Brokeback Mountain (2005): Why did Jack and Ennis break up?

Many people think of Brokeback Mountain as a groundbreaking film, but reviews at the time were mixed. It caused a lot of controversy because of how it portrayed homosexuality and how it questioned morality, religion, and social values.

This crazy, creatively complex film became popular because it showed a different side to the homophobic rhetoric about how “unnatural” being gay was at the time. It has been replaced by an unnatural suppression of sexuality.

The American Neo-Western romance drama “Brokeback Mountain” was directed by Ang Lee, who won an Academy Award for his work as a director, producer, and screenwriter.

The film stars Heath Ledger, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Anne Hathaway. It’s about two cowboys in the American West, Ennis Del Mar and Jack Twist, and their complicated 20-year love story.

The two people become close, but in the end, cultural norms destroy their relationship. Everyone feels bad for them. This type of “forbidden” love can exist between two women or between two people from different religions or cultures, making the film more relatable to the audience.

Where did the idea for Brokeback Mountain come from?

The movie “Brokeback Mountain” is based on a short story of the same name. The story is very sad. Annie Proulx wrote this story, which was printed in the New Yorker in 1997.

Anne Proulx talked about a time when she lived in Northern Wyoming and saw that many people there were anti-gay in an interview. When he was at the bar one night, he saw an old cowboy leaning against the wall. He looked at the men playing pool with a strange sadness and longing on his face.

The author wonders if he is gay, and he wonders what it would be like for an old cowboy to live in a place where being gay is frowned upon.

In another interview, Proulx said, “The novel is not” inspired. Rather, it is the result of years of casual observation and thinking, which led to the point where I could write it.

Proulx went on to talk about how far-flung parts of North America and local cultures influence his art and how he “watches the historical skew between what people expect and who them what they think and what happened to them.”

How does the movie reflect how the book was written?

In Brokeback Mountain, Proulx continually pits nature and culture against each other. The characters’ strong feelings for each other are so natural that they cannot be stopped, and the scenes shown as their love grows give the setting a symbolic meaning.

The scenery in Brokeback Mountain brings out the themes of desire and repression in a different way than it usually does in a western.

Throughout the movie, Jack Twist and Ennis Del Mar struggle to tell each other how they feel. Even if they do, they feel limited by society and culture and cannot say what they really want to say.

The setting of the story is important to how it is told. It’s an important part of Brokeback Mountain’s storytelling when dialogue alone isn’t enough.

The film is set in the rocky mountains of the west. The mountains are a dramatic contrast to the two characters’ different towns. They both come from places that are both physically and emotionally empty, and Brokeback Mountain gives them a way to get out of there.

As society expected, Jack moved to Texas to live with his wealthy bride. Ennis, on the other hand, is bound by money and responsibilities.

From the beautiful view from the top of the mountain to the boring, everyday life that society expects of them, they go through a lot. In the film, the mountains are alive, wild, and passive, while their hometowns are boring, tame, lonely, and lonely. The mountain also serves as a tombstone for the men’s relationship, which should be laid to rest.

Why did Jack break up with Ennis?

Sometimes Ennis and Jack bump into each other when they are both out fishing. But at some point, they decided that they would be too different to be together. The decision was made because of what Ennis’ dad did to a gay man when he caught them in the act.

This memory was a big part of what scared her son. Sadly, after arguing and then making up, the two people went their separate ways.

How did Ennis know that Jack had passed away?

Years later, Ennis sends Jack a postcard, which is returned to him with the word “Dead” written on it. He wasted no time and immediately called Jack’s partner, Lureen. Through Lureen, he learns that Jack died in a car accident where a tire blew out his face.

Ennis can’t help but think about a death that comes from his worst fears. He thinks that Jack may have been killed in a violent act. Lureen also tells Jack that her husband wants to spread his ashes all over Brokeback Mountain.

Ennis travels to do what Jack wants and talk to his parents. However, his father said he would prefer to scatter the ashes throughout the family property.

How did Jack really die?

Although Lureen’s claims appear to be true, there may be another explanation. There are hints in the film about how Jack was hurt and died. In an earlier scene, Jack was seen making moves on a man inside a bar. The two angry men looked at Jack as the cowboy turned to talk to his friend in the corner. One can see how quickly things can go wrong for him and kill him.

Jack often tries to get what he wants by talking to men, so he probably gets killed in the process. Also, the movie does nothing to make Ennis feel better. So, it is possible that this situation really happened.

In an interview, Anne Hathaway said she doesn’t know what happened to Jack. He even said that the scene in the movie where Lureen calls Ennis was shot twice. Someone sees Lureen tell Ennis how she found out that her partner was gay and that he was killed because of his sexuality. Another is when Lureen tells Ennis that Jack died because a tire blew into his face.

Ultimately, both acquisitions are combined rather than each being used on its own. Anne doesn’t seem to understand why Ang Lee told them to do this.

Does Lureen know if Jack is gay or straight?

Lureen may have learned about her partner’s sexual preferences over time, but nothing of the sort is shown on screen. He tells Ennis in the movie that his partner wants to spread his ashes all over Brokeback Mountain.

He might have thought that Jack might have lived in the mountains when he was young. In reality, though, that gives Jack and Ennis a safe place to meet.

At some point in the film, Lureen tells the other girls about how her partner doesn’t want to “dance” with her. In this case, dancing can be associated with having a close relationship. He even said he told his wife he couldn’t “drink.” He hints that he may have asked his wife to stop having a gay relationship.

Jack had “drank” a lot, but, as he said, he didn’t care. Her eyes seem to be watering as she speaks, which could mean that she knows that Jack was with Ennis before or that she is grieving for her late husband.
