The only piece of information that could have assisted Pennsylvania State Police squad L detectives in their search for missing 12-year-old Eric Pyles was and has fallen from the headlines.

Eric Pyles got off the school bus at 2:30 p.m. regular time on Tuesday, December 12, 2000. He did this as always.

On that particular day, a handful of his 12-year-old classmates noticed that he walked to his home in Union Township, Pennsylvania in the opposite direction than he often did.

After walking through the back yard of a house on Silvertown Road, he disappeared from our line of sight. He had resolved never to return to his old house.

Maria realized something was wrong with the circumstances when Eric didn’t come home from school the Tuesday after the day before. By four o’clock in the afternoon, she had reached the point where she was so worried that she decided to inform the Pennsylvania State Police that her brother was missing.

Eric had a habit of running away, although he was never very far from home, and once away he was caught up fairly quickly.

Maria observed that he went to school that morning in a cheerful mood; so he should have come home as soon as possible, unless something at school disturbed him.

Immediately after Eric was reported missing, community members and volunteer firefighters in addition to the Pennsylvania State Police began searching for him.

It had been a chilly day and after the sun had set the temperature was expected to drop well below freezing. They were aware they needed to identify the 12-year-old as soon as possible to prevent the child from suffering from hypothermia, which was a real concern.

Eric Pyle’s case update

After leaving the chapel and entering the forest, Eric Pyles’ trail seemed to have come to a complete standstill. Investigators could not locate anyone who might have seen Eric after 2:45 p.m. this Tuesday.

They continued their search around the church and Eric’s house, but they couldn’t find Eric anywhere. Maria explained that despite the fact that Eric had regularly brought up the subject of moving to Virginia, Eric never believed he would actually go through with the move.

Investigators traveled to the Shenandoah Valley to meet with Eric’s parents and other relatives, but they could not find any trace of Eric’s presence there.

Eric had previously explained that he was unsuccessful in his attempts to get a ride with a stranger because no one ever stopped to pick him up. Investigators feared that he might have attempted to hitchhike to Virginia, unaware of how dangerous the endeavor would be.

Eric Pyles family information

Eric Pyles was born and raised in Luray, Virginia, and his parents still lived there at the time of his disappearance. However, according to authorities, he often returned within a short period of time, although he had a tendency to run away.

Eric’s younger brother Thomas and he had recently moved to Pennsylvania. After their parents were accused of neglecting and abusing them while living with them in Luray, Virginia, the children’s older sister, Maria, was cared for after the charges were filed against their parents.

They were moved to Maria’s home on Awol Road, which she shared with her husband and three children. Maria lived there with her family. The transition hadn’t been easy.

Both Thomas and Eric, like many other children from abusive families, struggled with a variety of behavioral issues. They weren’t used to living in such a structured environment, so following Maria’s rules was a challenge for them. As a result, they didn’t appreciate having to do this.
